Gwyneth Paltrow knows that one key to being a good parent is letting your children grow up to become who they are meant to be.
PEOPLE caught up with the actress, 52, at the Gwyneth Paltrow X Genesis House “The Forest Within” exhibition in New York City on Thursday, May 8.
During the interview, she discussed the advice she is currently giving her 20-year-old daughter, Apple Martin, and her 19-year-old son, Moses Martin, whom she shares with ex-husband Chris Martin.

Paltrow is also a stepmother to husband Brad Falchuk’s two children, son Brody and daughter Isabella, whom he shares with his ex-wife Suzanne Bukinik.
“I think I really encourage them to be true to themselves and, like, to do what feels right to them,” Paltrow tells PEOPLE. “I think like all the mistakes I made were being talked in or out of something.”

“I really want them, even if I don’t agree with it, like, I want them to be really true to their idea of their purpose and their individuality. She [Apple] still has another year of college, so, you know, I’m like right, soak it in, and you know, it goes really fast,” says Paltrow.
She also tells PEOPLE that she has surprisingly been able to see her kids more despite her and their busy schedules.
“I’ve actually been able to see them more. You know, my son’s on, they’re both on the East Coast — well, he’s on the East Coast and she’s southeast. And I did a film here in the fall, and it was great ’cause I got to see my son and stepson, who were just very close by quite a lot, which was really nice,” she says.
Paltrow adds that she just saw Apple over the weekend and now “they’re [her kids are] coming home.”

“They’re done for the year, so I can’t, I can’t wait,” she adds.
“The Forest Within” exhibit is open to the public from May 9 to June 29 at Genesis House in New York City. The exhibit is described as an “immersive journey centered around Korean heritage, nature and design.”
