NEED TO KNOW

  • An individual complained on Reddit after they drove nearly six hours to a wedding where “there was almost no food” for the celebration’s 100 guests

  • Only chips and salsa were served during cocktail hour, mini tacos with small sides at reception, and ice pops instead of wedding cake for dessert

  • Reddit users commented that if a couple cannot afford to adequately feed their guests, then they should cut down on their guest list rather than “skimping” on food

One wedding guest was looking forward to dinner, only to end up staying hungry.

In a post on Reddit’s “Wedding Shaming” forum, a wedding guest recalled the time they drove to a venue “almost six hours away.” Following the long drive and an “incomprehensible” two-hour mass ceremony in Latin, the guest couldn’t wait for dinner.

“At least the reception to follow was going to be filled with good food, right?” the Redditor wrote.

Wrong. During cocktail hour, there was one appetizer — a pile of chips and a single bowl of salsa.

“That was it,” the guest said, adding that the appetizer “was immediately depleted by throngs of starving guests who had spent the entire morning traveling to get there.”

Because “virtually all of the guests had to travel” in order to attend the wedding, the Reddit user was expecting more.

“And look, I’m not a snobby person,” the individual said. “I wasn’t expecting gold-encrusted steak on a platter. I just wanted FOOD. For about an hour, all I had in my system were the few chips I could snag from the rabid crowd and several glasses of wine.”

The dinner — “if one could call it that” — was also a let down.

“I swear to god, this was the smallest ‘buffet’ I’ve ever seen at a wedding,” the guest recalled. “And there were at least 100 people there. All we were offered was a mini taco buffet with a few tins of meat, rice, beans, and sides.”

Guests were called by table number to line up for their food. The first tables ate the food “very quickly,” leaving everyone else to wait “hungry” for at least half an hour until another “paltry” serving was refilled.

“There was almost no food to go around,” the Redditor said.

The guest noted that although they were “devastated,” they were one of the “lucky” ones who at least got a little bit of food, managing to make a small taco with rice.

To make matters worse, the highly anticipated wedding cake was not for the guests.

“The bride and groom cut a slice out of a wedding cake in front of everyone… and then the cake was wheeled away,” the guest said. “No one was served a slice. The cake was just… for them?”

Guests applauded during the cake cutting, only to be refused a slice. Instead, each guest was given a single chocolate ice pop.

“Again, I’m not trying to sound like I demand tons of food at events,” the Redditor reiterated. “I just didn’t expect so little to be served [at] what was essentially a destination wedding for 100+ guests. We ended up getting food in the city afterwards because we were still starving by the end of the night.”

Fellow Reddit users argued that the “rude” bride and groom shouldn’t have invited so many people to their wedding if they couldn’t afford to feed them.

“If you can’t feed 100 guests, invite 50 and feed them well,” one person commented, with another writing, “I’d rather go without decorations than skimp on food. And if you can’t afford that, just skip the big wedding and celebrate some other way.”

“It is RIDICULOUS to not feed your guests,” a different Redditor added.
