NEED TO KNOW

  • One groom’s mother expressed her disapproval of his marriage by wearing “mourning black” to his wedding, and sobbing “loudly during the vows”

  • A wedding guest described the woman’s behavior as “bizarre” on Reddit, and argued that it was worse than if she were to wear a white dress to the wedding

  • Reddit users in the comments section said that both attire options were “bad” and “ridiculous”

A woman made it clear that she disapproved of her son’s marriage through her outfit.

In a recent post on Reddit’s “Wedding Drama” forum, a wedding guest recalled attending a ceremony where the mother of the groom let her somber attire do all the talking.

“I once attended a wedding where the [bride’s] MIL (mother-in-law) wore mourning black, including an enormous black hat with a veil,” the individual recalled.

To make matters worse, the woman “sobbed loudly during the vows,” as if she were at a funeral.

“It was….bizarre,” they added.

The Redditor pointed out that the majority of wedding horror stories they’ve read on the platform about “the drama and trauma” of a bride’s soon-to-be mother-in-law involve them breaking a major social etiquette rule by wearing a white dress to the wedding.

In many Western cultures, it is considered rude for women to wear white at someone else’s wedding. This is because white is generally reserved for the bride, so a guest wearing that color may be perceived as attention-seeking, disrespectful or inappropriate.

Meanwhile, wearing mourning black clothes may symbolize grief and loss. While this is typically reserved for a funeral or to acknowledge someone who has died, the woman in this case may be “mourning” the loss of her son as he ties the knot, and prioritizes another woman in his life.

The wedding guest said that it is understandable for brides to be “furious” at women who wear white to their wedding. However, even though this “absolutely sucks,” the Redditor argued that wearing all black might be worse.

In the comments section, fellow Reddit users didn’t debate the subject much.

“Either way, she would still look ridiculous, and people would not remember her fondly for it,” one person said, with another individual agreeing, “They are both bad, but if MIL (mother-in-law) did that I would hope the bride would just walk away.”

Redditors were more concerned about the groom’s behavior in situations like these, specifically whether or not he would stand up to his mother and defend the bride.

“I genuinely wonder where the grooms in all of these stories stand?” one person questioned. “Like if my MIL (mother-in-law) showed up in white I know for a fact my fiancé would be so furious that he would kick her out personally.”
