You know something that’s not “Young & Dumb?” PEOPLE’s exclusive look behind the scenes of the pop-rock anthem sung by Avril Lavigne and Simple Plan.
Lavigne shared intimate photos from filming with PEOPLE and wrote captions for each one to give fans an inside look at the creation of the music video for the track, which is out now.
In a statement shared with PEOPLE, the “Girlfriend” hitmaker said that the new song is “about friendship, nostalgia, and the way music has kept us connected through the years. I can’t wait to share it with you live this summer.”
“We wanted to capture that special time in our lives — when everything was new, and we were chasing our dreams,” said Lavigne.
“This song is for our fans. It’s a tribute to the past, but also a celebration of the present. In our hearts, we’re still those same kids, and our love for music hasn’t changed,” she added.

Dancing out Loud
First set up of the music video! Party scene in the hotel room. Fun fact: I had a rotary phone like this in my room growing up that was orange.

I wanted to get a tattoo in the music video that spelled out “Young & Dumb” to go along with the lyric “let’s get stupid tattoos” just for fun. Now I’m making temporary tattoos to give away to fans at the shows. Now everyone coming to the show can wear a “Young & Dumb” tattoo. Maybe I’ll even give some out from onstage.

Our performance scene was in an empty pool for this music video. This full performance shot in the pool was really fun!

This bell cart scene is one of my favorite scenes in the video. It was actually crazy — they were pushing me on it and it didn’t seem like it was going that fast, but then on video it looks so fast!
Creating Memories

It is hilarious to actually shoot a music video inside the bunk area because we all live on tour buses and it is such a part of our culture touring on the road and a big part of our lives. It was epic to film inside. We didn’t intend for the single cover to be inside the bunk area but I had my photographer Skyler shoot us and it ended up being my favorite photo so I made it the cover.
Forever Friends

I have been friends with Simple Plan for over 22 years and it is amazing to think that we have gotten to experience so many things together. We are all just kids from small towns in Canada who really got to live their dream and see the world.
