What developers should do today—before the threshold

Despite the gloom, Hinton insists catastrophic outcomes are “not inevitable.” His short-term prescription is concrete:

  • Alignment funding: Redirect at least one-third of frontier-model compute budgets to interpretability and value-learning research.
  • Hard governance: Mandate pre-training safety audits for any model above a compute threshold, similar to clinical-trial protocols.
  • Open accountability: Require watermarking and log retention for high-impact agents so regulators can replay decisions after incidents.

He also urges researchers to bake in “maternal instincts”—technical incentives that make systems prioritize human welfare even as they self-improve.

Users face a quieter, but still serious, set of risks

You don’t need to run a datacenter to feel the effects. Hinton predicts the first wave of harm will arrive through:

  • Hyper-personalized scams that clone voices and images in real time.
  • Algorithmic echo chambers that erode shared reality faster than current social feeds.
  • Skill polarization where only workers who can orchestrate AI workflows command rising wages.

His advice for individuals: treat incoming media with “default skepticism” and push employers for transparent AI-deployment policies before workplace monitoring becomes ubiquitous.

Hinge moment: act while models still need us

Hinton refuses to disavow his life’s work—“it would have been developed without me”—but frames the next decade as a hinge moment. “We haven’t done the research to figure out if we can peacefully coexist with them.
