Zaya will be majoring in astrobiology in the fall
Gabrielle Union’s daughter is getting in extra time with her sister before she leaves for college.
The actress, 52, spoke with PEOPLE on the blue carpet at the 2025 Met Gala and shared that while she and husband Dwyane Wade are feeling “scared” about Zaya, 17, leaving for college in the fall, her family is trying to make the most of the time they have together at home.
“Scared but excited for her,” Union says when asked about how her family is feeling about Zaya leaving. “[She’s] an astrobiology major. So we can’t help with that. We haven’t been able to help with homework since the fourth grade, but we’re excited for next year.”

Union’s 6-year-old daughter Kaavia has been able to get in some extra time with her sister since the two are at the same school for the first time this year.
“It’s funny because Zaya’s a senior and [Kaavia’s] in kindergarten at the same school,” Union shares. “And so during Kaav’s lunch, Zaya comes and hangs out with Kaav. And this is really special that they’re at the same school, at least for one year.”
Union shares Kaavia with husband Wade, 43. She is stepmom to the NBA star’s two children, Zaire, 22, and Zaya with his ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches, and a son Xavier, 11, with Aja Metoyer. Wade is also the legal guardian of his nephew, Dahveon Morris, 21.
Back in February, Zaya was interviewed by Seventeen for their new cover story and was asked how her dad and stepmom feel about her dating.
“They’re really cool about it,” she shared at the time. “Me and my stepmom love to dish the dirt and tap into the high school gossip. She gets excited for me when I’m like, ‘Oh, I like this person.’ “
Although her parents are okay with her dating and even want to meet the people she’s into, Zaya shared that her dad does try to scare away any potential suitors.
“My dad… he tries to scare any person I have interest in. He’s kind of intimidating,” Zaya admitted. “The people I’ve dated have all been afraid of him in the first interaction. He’s gigantic and has this deep, booming voice.”
“But the facade only lasts for so long and you actually see his real personality,” she revealed. “He’s a teddy bear.”
