Gabrielle Union was recently featured in People’s “World’s Most Beautiful” campaign, and she brought her six-year-old daughter Kaavia with her. During the interview with the publication, Union told her daughter about the inspiration behind their new diaper company, Proudly.
The actress was looking back at different red carpet outfits with her daughter and stopped on a photo of herself with Kaavia and Dwayne Wade, Kaavia’s dad and Union’s husband, at the 2019 Kid’s Choice Sports Awards. “You know what happened on this carpet right here?” she asked her daughter and told her exactly what happened. “You peed on us.”

Kaavia’s mom said that the event was the first time she walked on a carpet (well, held), at eight months old, but that wasn’t the only reason why this moment was memorable for the whole family. “Your diaper did not hold,” Union said. “It did not hold, which is one of the reasons Mommy and Daddy created Proudly, so parents don’t get peed on — on red carpets.”
The brand launched in 2022, three years after the incident, and while it was originally focused on diapers—they’ve since expanded to hair care products that “centered [around] the needs of melanated babies.” The reason for doing so also came from Wade and Union’s daughter, dad said in a previous interview with People.

“I’m not saying I’m doing Kaav’s hair often — because she doesn’t allow me to — but just as dads, when we get an opportunity to have that moment with our daughter or our son, when it comes to the hair moment, in our community, that hair moment is everything,” he told the magazine. “I remember when I was trying to do [Kaavia’s] hair and I was just trying to put water in it and detangle it, right?… I was trying to put water in and comb it out,”

He told People that this lead the brand to releasing a “softening shampoo, moisturizing medium conditioner, nourishing heavy conditioner and defining detangler.”
Now that Kaavia is coming of age, she is starting to learn the larger role she is playing in her parents’ lives.
