From Math Class to Paralympic Gold: How David Hoff Built an Unmatched U.S. Sled Hockey Dynasty

David Hoff’s journey from a North Dakota math classroom to the pinnacle of Paralympic sled hockey has yielded an unprecedented dynasty. With four straight gold medals and a fifth within reach, his analytical approach has redefined the sport—and set the stage for a historic achievement that may never be matched.

In the world of elite coaching, most backgrounds are forged within the sport they eventually command. David Hoff shattered that mold. Long before he ever diagrammed a power play for Team USA sled hockey, he was standing before chalkboards in Bottineau, North Dakota, population just over 2,000, teaching algebra and coaching high school hockey.

His improbable ascent to head coach of the most dominant Paralympic program on earth began with an email he almost deleted as spam. In 2010, J.J. O’Connor, then head of the disabled section for USA Hockey, reached out to see if the math teacher would help with a regional development camp. Hoff, 49 at the time, was skeptical—but he replied. That camp ignited a coaching trajectory that has produced eight seasons of unprecedented success: four consecutive Paralympic gold medals and, now, a semifinal run that puts a historic fifth within grasp USA TODAY.

USA Paralympic sled hockey coach taught math. Now he's on gold streak.

No hockey team in Olympic or Paralympic history has ever reached five consecutive gold medal games. The closest parallel is the Soviet Union dynasty, which won four straight from 1964 to 1976 before being upset in its bid for a fifth by the 1980 U.S. “Miracle on Ice” team. Hoff’s squad now stands on the brink of surpassing that legacy, having already achieved a feat no other hockey program—able-bodied or Paralympic—has ever accomplished.

Hoff’s methodology is a direct transfer from the classroom. He treats sled hockey like an equation to be solved, emphasizing pace, precision, and system mastery. “I had an idea in my mind about how the game could be played. I thought U.S. sled hockey was really good. I thought there was a chance to really combine the finesse with the speed,” Hoff said. His vision transformed a strong program into a relentless machine that combines skill with an almost clinical execution.

The depth of the U.S. sled hockey development system—widely regarded as the deepest in the world—is a testament to Hoff’s holistic involvement. Even while serving as head coach, he never fully abandoned teaching. He remained a math teacher at Bottineau High until 2019, then continued at the even smaller Rolette Public School when they requested his help—a commitment that underscores his identity as an educator first USA TODAY. During summers, he tours developmental camps nationwide, scouting talent with the same sharp eye he once used to calculate clock-killing kneel-downs for the Bottineau football team, where he served as strength and conditioning coach.

His rise through the ranks was steady. After that first camp in 2010, Hoff became a trusted lieutenant to legendary coaches Jeff Sauer and Guy Gosselin, working six years in the program before being named head coach following the 2018 PyeongChang Games, where he had served as an assistant and claimed gold. “If you look back at the last couple of coaches… both just outstanding people,” Hoff remarked. “And then they hire a math teacher from rural North Dakota? They had to dial the wrong number.”

That humility masks a fierce devotion that teammates echo. Goaltender Griffin LaMarre captured it perfectly: “Coach Hoff said to us last night in a team meeting, if they offered him the men’s Olympic, women’s Olympic or the sled Paralympic head coaching job, he would choose the sled team every time. He’s committed and devoted to this team. And I think that just is like a top‑down trait that starts at the coaching level and trickles down to the team. That’s why we have such a great culture.”

As the semifinals approach in Milano Cortina, the narrative transcends sport. Hoff’s run represents a rare dynasty built not on hockey pedigree but on educational principles—discipline, repetition, and belief in a system. A fifth gold would cement his team as the most dominant in Paralympic history, a fitting tribute to a coach who proved that sometimes, the best playbook is the one you carried out of a classroom.
