Common symptoms of listeria in the gut, per Mayo Clinic, include diarrhea, upset stomach and vomiting. The symptoms typically start within a day of eating the contaminated food and pass in a few days.

In more serious cases, the infection can spread into the brain and spinal cord and cause fever and chill, flu-like symptoms, headache, confusion and more.
