Freddy Peralta’s New York Chapter: A Met Primed for a Long-Term Commitment
SHARE

Freddy Peralta’s arrival in New York is more than just a trade; it’s a calculated move for both the pitcher and the Mets, with the All-star signaling a willingness to commit long-term to the organization after a period of adjustment.

The New York Mets didn’t just acquire a frontline pitcher when they traded for Freddy Peralta; they secured a potential cornerstone who is already looking toward a future in Queens. In his first public comments since the blockbuster deal, the 29-year-old All-Star made it clear he’s willing to consider a multiyear contract extension, a significant development for a team desperate to lock down its top talent.

Peralta, who is due to make $8 million this season, expressed a desire to get acclimated to New York before discussing a long-term arrangement. “I’ve got to see around, share time with my teammates and think about different ideas, learn about everybody, coaches (and) the organization in general,” he said on a Zoom call with reporters. “And then we can see.” This patient approach mirrors that of David Stearns, the Mets’ president of baseball operations who acquired Peralta in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers last week. Stearns confirmed he would allow the right-hander an adjustment period before potentially broaching a long-term deal, a sentiment that aligns perfectly with the player’s own stated goals.

The reunion between Peralta and Stearns is a key subplot in this story. The two have a long history, with Stearns having originally acquired the then-19-year-old prospect from the Seattle Mariners in December 2015. This prior connection provides a foundation of trust that could be crucial in navigating future contract negotiations. “I knew that something was going to happen and it was a little hard at the same time, because I spent my whole career in Milwaukee and there’s a lot of great memories over there,” Peralta reflected. “But this is a business and anything can happen. I was prepared for the moment. And being honest, I’m really happy to be here in New York and be a member of the Mets organization.”

For the Mets, Peralta’s arrival is a direct response to a critical need. Last season, the team’s rotation wore down dramatically, with only Clay Holmes, Kodai Senga, and David Peterson reaching 100 innings. The club, which had the best record in the majors through June 12, ultimately missed the playoffs due in large part to a lack of starting depth. Peralta immediately shores up that weakness, bringing a proven track record of excellence. He made the National League All-Star team in 2025, finished fifth in Cy Young Award voting, led the league with 17 wins, and set career bests with a 2.70 ERA and 204 strikeouts over 176 2/3 innings.

His impact extends beyond last season. Peralta and Dylan Cease are the only major league pitchers to make at least 30 starts and record at least 200 strikeouts in each of the last three seasons. This level of consistency is precisely what the Mets have been missing since the days of Jacob deGrom and Steven Matz. The hope is that Peralta can provide the stability and frontline presence that was absent during the second half of 2025, preventing the kind of collapse that derailed the team’s playoff hopes.

While Peralta’s focus is on getting healthy and being ready every fifth day, the business of baseball looms large. With only one year of club control remaining before he hits free agency, he represents a massive asset. The Mets, coming off an offseason that saw them part with stars like Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, and Brandon Nimmo, need to build a sustainable core. Signing Peralta to a multiyear deal would be a powerful statement, showing that the organization is committed to building around young, elite talent rather than relying on short-term rentals.

For now, the focus is on the field. Peralta’s primary goal is to contribute to a winning team in New York. But his openness to a long-term deal suggests a future here is not only possible but a real possibility. The next chapter of Freddy Peralta’s career is being written in Queens, and it has the potential to be a very long one.
