Fox next fall: Less drama, more fun and games, but no ‘Masked Singer’

Fox is unveiling a fall schedule with plenty of reality TV and sports and its usual Sunday animation crop but just two other scripted series.

In a lineup presented to advertisers on May 12, the network is pairing two returning freshmen, medical drama “Doc” and mystery “Murder in a Small Town,” on Tuesday nights, but will air game shows on Monday and Wednesday, including two newcomers, “99 To Beat” and a celebrity revival of onetime NBC hit “The Weakest Link.” Last fall, Fox aired four dramas on two nights.

Returning midseason shows include comedies “Animal Control” and “Going Dutch,” the animated “Grimsburg” and “Family Guy” and reality competition series “The Masked Singer,” which is sitting out fall for the first time since its 2019 premiere. Also due: New drama “Memory of a Killer,” about a hitman who develops early Alzheimer’s disease; a second revival of NBC’s early-2000s gross-out reality show “Fear Factor”; “The Faithful,” a three-week series about the Old Testament’s Book of Genesis; and “Best Medicine,” an hourlong comedy starring Josh Charles (“The Good Wife”) as an irascible surgeon who moves to an East Coast fishing village, where his bedside manner is lacking. (It’s based on British series “Doc Martin.”)

“American Dad,” another animated comedy that aired on Fox from 2005-14 and then moved to TBS, is returning to Fox at midseason.

The network announced that “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Dexter: Original Sin” star Patrick Dempsey will lead the new series, “Memory of a Killer.” Dempsey, 59, will star as New York City hitman Angelo Ledda, who lives a seemingly ordinary life as a photocopier salesman and father in sleepy upstate New York.

There’s a further twist as Ledda develops early-onset Alzheimer’s. The series will follow the hitman as he works to “save his family – before he forgets the past,” according to a Fox release.

Fox has canceled “Rescue: Hi-Surf,” a freshman drama for which it had high hopes, along with “9-1-1: Lone Star.” The network is waiting to announce the fates of three other shows – “Alert: Missing Persons Unit,” “The Cleaning Lady” and “The Great North” – while each is airing new episodes. Final decisions usually come by June 30.
