Most people might think actors harbor ill feelings towards a younger talent who takes over their most recognizable on-screen characters.
But in the case of Superman Return‘s lead actor Brandon Routh, jealousy is the furthest thing from the former of Man of Steel actor’s mind.
Originally appearing as DC’s iconic blue and red-clad superhero in the generally well-received superhero film, Routh was instantly elevated to the public spotlight with his casting as Superman, rising from a relatively little-known actor into one of the biggest stars of the mid 2000s.
Sadly, in spite of its largely decent reviews from critics, Superman Return‘s poor financial performance axed any chances at a subsequent sequel, ending Routh’s tenure as the hero.
While viewers can only wonder what might have been if Routh had remained as the Man of Tomorrow, the 45-year-old Scott Pilgrim actor hasn’t shied away from publicly expressing his support for his successor David Corenswet in 2025’s summer blockbuster, Superman.
In a recent interview with Variety, Routh confirmed that he had indeed seen the first cinematic entry in the DC Universe, sharing his candid thoughts about the film.
“It was a lot of fun,” Routh told Variety. “I really enjoyed it. I think David [Corenswet] is fantastic. I cried no less than three times.”
Though Routh said that he avidly loved the film, he did admit most of his attraction to the film came from his nostalgic connection to the character.
“I see this in a different way,” Routh revealed. “I come at it from a different perspective. I really got into it as I’m watching him navigate those tricky Superman moments in the first conversation with Lois and Clark in the apartment. And then all of the family stuff for me really hit. It’s a big movie. There’s a lot in there. I have to go see it again.”
