Former royal butler Grant Harrold is spilling the tea in his new book, The Royal Butler: My Remarkable Life of Royal Service, and explained why he doesn’t understand Prince Harry‘s rift with the rest of the royal family.
In the book, Harrold, 47, detailed his seven years working as the butler for King Charles and his family. One topic he touched on is Harry’s relationship with his Charles, 76, his stepmother, Queen Camilla, and his brother, Prince William.
“The four of them, I promise you, got on so well,” Harrold claimed in the book, which was shared in an excerpt by The Telegraph on Monday, August 18. “And that’s why I don’t understand what Harry’s said, I really don’t understand.”
He added, “I saw them having dinners together, I saw them having drinks together, I saw them going to parties together.”
Harrold also said that there was “no animosity” between Harry, 40, and his immediate family members when he worked as their butler. “The king used to do things to make them laugh and giggle,” he recalled.
Harry’s rift with his family became known when he and and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped down from their royal duties in 2020 and moved to California. The couple went on to discuss their family troubles in a tell-all CBS interview in 2021 with Oprah Winfrey, as well as in Harry’s 2023 book, Spare.
Harry claimed in his memoir that he and William, 43, had a physical altercation in 2019. The fight created issues that they have not yet been able to work through.

While there’s no denying that the family has a lot to work on, an insider exclusively told Parade that Harry and William might be able to mend their relationship amid Charles’ cancer battle. “King Charles really isn’t doing well,” the source said in an August 14 interview, noting that their father is “deteriorating more.”
“It wouldn’t be surprising if William and Harry reconnected a bit more over this. This could be the thing that pushes it to happen,” the insider said.
