(The Center Square) – A portion of I-40 near the Tennessee-North Carolina line remains closed Thursday morning after flooding and a rockslide damaged the roadway.

Tennessee Department of Transportation officials on social media showed vehicles stuck in flood water near mile marker 450 in Cocke County on Wednesday afternoon. The Department of Transportation in North Carolina said from Exit 20 to the state is closed.

No injuries were reported. All vehicles were removed from the area just before 8 p.m., Department of Transportation spokesman Mark Nagi said on social media.

Tennessee Department of Transportation crews “are on site assessing the interstate as well as the slope,” Nagi said on social media.

The detour route to North Carolina is I-81 North to I-26 East.

Cocke County was one of a half dozen Tennessee counties hit hard by the remnants of Hurricane Helene in September. The storm claimed the lives of 236 people, including 107 from North Carolina and 18 from Tennessee.

Portions of I-40 were closed until March as crews worked to repair the damage.

The storm also damaged I-26, another key highway linking Tennessee and North Carolina. It reopened in November.
