Falcons vs. Saints: Playoff Race, Draft Lottery, and Bijan Robinson’s Revenge on Tampa Bay

The Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints collide in a regular-season finale that could decide the NFC South crown, playoff seeding, and even the NFL Draft order — all while Bijan Robinson seeks to derail Tampa Bay’s season.

The Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints are no longer just division rivals — they’re playoff contenders locked in a tense, high-stakes finale that could reshape the NFC South landscape. With both teams having surged late in the season, Sunday’s game isn’t merely about pride or momentum — it’s about control over the postseason picture and the NFL Draft lottery.

Atlanta enters the matchup at 7-9 after a three-game winning streak that has ignited hope despite its eighth straight year without a playoff berth. New Orleans, meanwhile, stands at 6-10 but boasts a four-game win streak — tied for its longest since 2020 — powered by rookie quarterback Tyler Shough’s breakout performance.

The stakes couldn’t be higher. The Carolina Panthers (8-8) will claim the NFC South title if they defeat or tie the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-9) on Saturday. But Atlanta can also clinch a playoff spot if it defeats New Orleans — a scenario head coach Raheem Morris insists his team has already accepted.

“It’s really upsetting,” Morris said. “You would have liked for us to have won some games so that we could have been in this race, or leading this race. We feel we could’ve been, but we’re not. What we’ve done is focused on winning and focused on doing the best job we can do to close out our last game.”

The Falcons’ offensive engine, Bijan Robinson, has carried them through their late-season surge. Ranked fourth in the NFL in rushing yards (1,445) and second among running backs in receiving yards (810), Robinson remains the only player in the league who consistently turns carries into touchdowns — and now he’s targeting Tampa Bay’s playoff hopes.

“That could be cool,” Robinson said of spoiling the Buccaneers’ season. “That’s so unfortunate (if there is) a three-way tie. I wish it was us going in. … But it is what it is. We did our job. We’re trying to finish our job.”

New Orleans’ turnaround began when rookie quarterback Tyler Shough took over in November. In nine weeks, he’s averaged 304.3 passing yards per game and thrown four touchdowns in his last three wins — solidifying his case for Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.

“Frankly, I don’t care about anything else other than finishing strong this week,” Shough said. “… We’ve got another really good week this week to utilize our reps and make sure we finish off the way we want to because last time (against Atlanta), it wasn’t good enough.”

In their first meeting, Kirk Cousins led Atlanta to a 24-10 win on Nov. 23. The Saints held Robinson to just 70 rushing yards — a performance head coach Kellen Moore praised as “a step forward.”

“You can do a lot of things right, and you can do one thing wrong and it’s a touchdown,” Moore said of Robinson.

On the injury front, Atlanta’s defense faces significant losses. Cornerbacks Mike Hughes (ankle) and Clark Phillips III (triceps/illness) and defensive lineman Brandon Dorlus (hamstring) are ruled out. Wide receivers Drake London and Darnell Mooney, tight end Kyle Pitts, defensive lineman Sam Roberts, and safety DeMarcco Hellams are questionable.

New Orleans’ roster is also depleted. Running back Alvin Kamara (knee/ankle) and defensive tackles Bryan Bresee (knee) and Nathan Shepherd (ankle/knee) are out. Backup quarterback Spencer Rattler (right finger), guard Dillon Radunz (knee), and linebacker Demario Davis (calf) are questionable.

Saints wide receiver Chris Olave was hospitalized due to a blood clot in his lung and will sit out Sunday — though expected to make a full recovery.

The outcome of this game doesn’t just determine division standings — it impacts how teams position themselves for the playoffs and the draft. A Falcons victory gives them a shot at securing a top-three seed, while a Saints win keeps New Orleans alive for a wild-card bid — and potentially pushes Tampa Bay further down the draft board.

This is more than a rivalry game — it’s a turning point. For Atlanta, it’s about closing a disappointing season with dignity. For New Orleans, it’s about proving their resilience. And for Bijan Robinson? It’s about delivering justice — to himself, to his team, and to Tampa Bay.
