The Buccaneers has completed its second season, and dedicated fans are eager to know what is going to happen next to their favorite American heiresses-turned-English duchesses. Here’s what we know so far about the possibility of a third season of The Buccaneers.

Spoilers for the season finale of season two below.

Apple hasn’t announced a third season yet.

So far, there’s been no official news on season three from Apple, but that doesn’t mean the show won’t return for another chapter.

When asked if the show returns for a third season, what would you want your character to explore next, Christina Hendricks told Town & Country that she hopes “Patty learns how to nurture herself rather than always taking care of others. She’s going to have to move forward, and I think that’s going to matter for her.”

Kristine Frøseth, who plays Nan, Duchess of Tintagel and the central character of the series, told T&C she hopes her character returns to her original journey, more like something we saw on season one. “She’s been lost in this tornado for a long time, and a lot changes at the end of season two. I hope she doesn’t lose herself again.”

Maybe a reset is in store for all of the St. George women if the show returns. Imogen Waterhouse, who plays Nan’s sister Jinny, told T&C that after the first two seasons, “I’d like her to hopefully take what she’s learned in season two and not just fall back into the same ideas of what’s important. Maybe find something she’s really passionate about—gardening or something. I don’t know. Or maybe she wants to live in Italy still and just stay there for 10 more seasons. I wouldn’t mind that.”

The ending is anyone’s guess.

Edith Wharton died in 1937 before she could finish writing the end of the book. The 1995 television miniseries version of The Buccaneers wrote its own ending, but that doesn’t mean there is a definitive one.

The showrunners have already gone off-book considerably this season. (Lizzy’s storyline is the best example of that.) But as the writing team told T&C before the season two premiere, they want to stay loyal to Wharton’s vision.

“We wanted to use all the very best bits of the book, which we love,” executive producer Katherine Jakeways said. “The world that she’s created and the kind of setup of the characters and the family…but also the found family of the girls and their friendship is the kind of heart of the book and it’s absolutely the heart of the show that we wanted to make.”

Jakeways and executive producer Beth Willis also spoke with Deadline after the season finale aired in August, addressing all the loose threads and cliffhanger at the very end. “There’s just so much unraveling to do, isn’t there? They’re all in a bit of a corner. Lizzy’s in a corner. What’s she going to do? Is she going to tell Theo about the baby? Will she lose him? If she does [tell him], does that mean she’s betrayed Nan? Is she going to keep quiet? What does that mean? What’s Theo going to do if he finds out about the baby?” Willis said. “And what’s Nan going to do now that she’s in hiding and she’s got a baby? The thing I’m most interested to know is, ‘How are they all going to get out of that corner?’”

On top of it all, what about the new heir of Tintagel coming in? All we know is that his name is Kit, he’s the illegitimate son of Theo’s father, and he’s known to be trouble. Producers haven’t shared a word about casting, except executive producer Joe Innes also told Deadline that they’re looking for “someone handsome.”
