Nothing is what it seems on this family’s private East Coast island.
On Tuesday, May 6, Prime Video released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming adaptation of E. Lockhart’s bestselling 2014 novel, We Were Liars, which sees Emily Alyn Lind, Esther McGregor, Joseph Zada and Shubham Maheshwari as the titular “liars.”
The teaser starts like all the liars’ summers do — picture-perfect, with everyone smiling and happy.
“Once upon a time, there was a mythical land where it was always summer,” Cadence (Lind) says in a voiceover. “We were happy, we wanted for nothing.”

Amid the bliss, the chemistry between Cadence and Gat (Maheshwari) becomes less easy to deny, and when she tells a knowing Mirren (McGregor) as much, Mirren replies, “I knew there was a vibe.”
This summer, though, everything is different for Cadence — and the whole Sinclair family.
“Something terrible happened last summer,” she says as an eerie scene of her washing up unconscious and alone on the beach plays. “And no one will tell me what.”
Cracks start to form in the family’s perfect facade quickly as Cadence searches for the truth. “When you’re left for dead, you want answers,” she warns as the teaser concludes.

The eight-episode series, which premieres June 18 on Prime Video and was written by The Vampire Diaries creator Julie Plec and The Originals‘ Carina Adly MacKenzie, explores the fallout after a “mysterious accident changes Cadence’s life forever.”
Cadence and her family — and most notably, her “tight-knit inner circle, nicknamed the Liars” — spend every summer on “her grandfather’s New England private island,” and the Sinclairs are “American royalty—known for their good looks, old money, and enviable bond.”
But after the accident, “everyone, including her beloved Liars, seems to have something to hide.”

We Were Liars author E. Lockhart told PEOPLE when revealing that Lind, 23, is narrating a new audiobook recording of the 2014 novel that the actress plays Cadence “with incredible charm and wit, but also with a ton of raw emotion and complexity.”
“She knows this character better than anyone on the planet,” the author said.
