The way animals interact and bond with one another is fascinating to see. Even without being able to communicate with each other, animals sometimes display touching acts of kindness in nature. This YouTube short by @marcos.sanchez shows an elephant saving a gazelle from drowning in water. Do animals usually help each other in nature, or is this a rare event? Read on to learn more!
Interspecies kindness is not very common.

So What Is Happening?
The video linked above shows a distressed gazelle struggling to stay afloat in a pond that it fell into. Luckily for the gazelle, an elephant comes over to lift it out of the water with its trunk. This raises questions about how these two different species get along with each other. Are they friendly like this in the wild? Are they friendly like this in the wild, or is their friendliness due to being enclosed together in a zoo? This can be explained by a concept called “interspecies empathy.” Normally, elephants and gazelles have no social bonds or friendships, tending to stick to their own groups. Interspecies empathy refers to a non-habitual relationship where animals of different species care for each other. Because the gazelle and elephant likely share an enclosure, this rare behavior may be occurring due to the time they have spent together.
Part of the reason this video is so amazing is that it shows off the intelligence of elephants. Elephants are famous for their high cognitive abilities, good memory, and emotional intelligence. In groups, they show grief and distress when members of their herd are in danger. While gazelles and elephants are definitely not part of the same herd, this video shows the elephant’s capacity to observe and respond to the distress of the gazelle. This challenges the stereotype that animals act only on instinct, showing that they can be more than just predators or prey—they can also make compassionate decisions. Although this behavior is rare and difficult to observe, it highlights how animals of different species can get along.
