Early 2000s Rocker ‘Unrecognizable’ After Debuting Dramatic New Look originally appeared on Parade.
AFI (A Fire Inside) frontman Davey Havok, 49, debuted a completely new look on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, while promoting the iconic rock band’s upcoming album, Silver Bleeds the Black Sun, and fans have a lot of thoughts about his “unrecognizable” transformation!
“I would never have guessed that was Davey outside of the context of this interview,” said one fan in the comments of a recent Alternative Press interview, while another added, “Totally unrecognizable!!! Whaaaat????”
The legendary frontman is known for being a chameleon and changing with each of his album releases, but this look — featuring fluffy hair, long braids, and a handlebar mustache — may be among his most dramatic. Fans are loving his dedication to switching up his look, and many praised him for his dedication to creating “eras” for his fans.

“Davey’s dedication to always change his look/style for every album is something that needs to be studied at the Academia,” said one fan, while another added, “He looks like an actor transforming his appearance for an upcoming role.”
The shocking transformation also generated many hilarious comparisons. Fans described his appearance as “overly hands-on yoga instructor,” “metal Bob Ross,” “Goth [Frank] Zappa,” “70s James Brolin,” and “like Robert Eggers’ version of Nosferatu if he existed in the mid-70s or early 80s.”
Silver Bleeds the Black Sun will be the band’s 12th studio album, and Havok describes this particular project to AP as “a struggle to reconcile existence in a godless dystopia that lacks sanctuary, mystique, reason, and a chance of survival,” as he mourns the loss of community-run artistic spaces he calls “sanctuaries.”

The band — also comprised of drummer Adam Carson, guitarist Jade Puget, and keyboardist Hunter Burgan — aims to always surprise fans with fresh perspectives, and Havok says “that comes from our need to be surprising to ourselves.”
The singer says that while writing, he “needs to feel that we’re doing something… that we haven’t touched on before” in order to feel “excited.” And while fans of the band’s older music may be shocked by the new “moods” they create now, Havok is more proud of the work’s evolution through the years, including their The Cure-esque new single “Behind The Clock.”

“If you look at the AFI records from the past, you can find records with a singular mood, but that mood is angst, or aggression, which is adjacent to angst,” he said. “There they were without a conversation. But as we grew and we got out of simply aggressive music, we left that. Upon leaving that, our records had all sorts of different moods within them.”
AFI’s new album, Silver Bleeds the Black Sun, is set to be released on October 3, 2025, via Run For Cover Records.
