In a move that stunned the rock world, the Eagles took the stage at the Sphere in Las Vegas on Jan. 24 without guitarist Joe Walsh for the first time since 1975, as the 78-year-old icon battles a severe case of the flu. Frontman Don Henley addressed the crowd, revealing the band’s decision to soldier on with an emergency rehearsal, marking a rare and significant moment in the band’s storied history.

For the first time in over 50 years, the iconic sound of the Eagles was missing a key component. On Saturday, Jan. 24, the legendary band performed at the Sphere in Las Vegas without guitarist Joe Walsh, who was forced to sit out due to a “bad case of the flu,” according to a report by Rolling Stone. The show marked the first time the Eagles have played without Walsh since he joined the group in 1975, replacing founding member Bernie Leadon.

Singer Don Henley broke the news to the Las Vegas crowd, explaining the difficult choice the band faced. “Joe has come down with a bad case of the flu. We had a choice to make. We could either cancel the whole thing, or we could man up and do the show,” Henley said, as reported by The Mercury News. “So we came down here this afternoon and had an emergency rehearsal for two hours. And fortunately, in this band, we have a deep bench.”

Henley, who is also 78, hinted that other members of the band were also feeling under the weather, framing the performance as a necessary act of resilience. After mentioning that music “is medicine,” he told the audience, “After the week we’ve had, we could all use some medicine.” He proceeded to set expectations for the evening, stating, “I’m not going to do much talking. I’m not going to do much jumping around. I’m not going to do any squatting. I’m just going to play the s— out of this guitar.”

The band’s “deep bench” was on full display, with Walsh’s iconic guitar parts handled primarily by Vince Gill and Deacon Frey. Gill, who joined the Eagles as a touring member in 2017, and Frey, who stepped in for his late father, Glenn Frey, in 2016, seamlessly filled the void. The setlist was also adjusted, swapping Walsh’s signature song “Funk #49” for the classic “Best of My Love,” a detail noted by Rolling Stone.

This performance follows a concerning trend, as Walsh was visibly ill during the previous night’s show on Jan. 23. According to Rolling Stone, he played for most of the set but spent some songs offstage and did not participate in the final bow. Henley addressed the situation that night as well, reassuring fans, “[Walsh] was sick last night. But he heroically made it through [most] of the show… Joe’s going to be okay. He just needs some time. Give him some love.”

The timing of this health scare is particularly poignant. The Eagles are currently celebrating a monumental achievement, as their 1976 compilation album, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, was recently certified quadruple diamond by the RIAA, making it the first album in history to achieve the distinction. The record, which remains the best-selling album of all time in the U.S. with over 40 million copies sold, underscores the band’s enduring legacy.

The band has 10 remaining dates at their Las Vegas residency, which began in September 2024. It remains unclear if Walsh will be able to perform at the next show on Friday, Jan. 30. The Eagles’ decision to proceed without a founding member is a testament to their commitment to their fans and the music, a sentiment Walsh himself echoed in a 2023 interview with PEOPLE, where he described the profound connection the band shares with its audience. “When the Eagles play, people come and sit next to each other and everybody gets along… There’s so much love coming at us from the audience that we play our ass off and everybody goes home happier.”

For fans, this historic show, born from necessity, will be remembered as a unique chapter in the Eagles’ unparalleled career, showcasing the band’s strength and the deep well of talent that has sustained them for decades.
