On Wednesday, July 30, Roadside Attractions debuted the first trailer for Twinless, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
O’Brien plays dual roles as twin brothers Roman and Rocky. The movie follows Roman after Rocky’s death as he befriends a man named Dennis (played by writer-director James Sweeney) at a support group for people grieving their twins.
Roman and his mom (Lauren Graham) are shown in grief in the trailer, and Roman then attends group counseling, through which he and Dennis quickly form a connection and bemoan that life as a twin has left them ill-equipped to spend time alone. Though the pair grow closer, their own secrets threaten to fracture their budding relationship.

“In Twinless, two young men meet in a twin support group and form an unlikely friendship,” reads a synopsis. “Roman and Dennis both search for solace and an identity without their other halves and soon become inseparable outside the group. But when Roman meets Dennis’ ebullient co-worker Marcie, all is revealed to be not what it seems, as each man harbors secrets that could unravel everything.”
Aisling Franciosi, Tasha Smith, Abbott Elementary‘s Chris Perfetti, Francois Arnaud, Susan Park and Cree also star in Twinless. Twinless won Sundance’s Audience Award in the U.S. dramatic competition in January, and O’Brien won the festival’s special jury award for acting.

“My Roman voice, I got self-conscious about it immediately because he pointed it out,” O’Brien told Variety in a January interview, while discussing his twin roles in the movie. “But that’s how I was processing the weight of the very sheltered life he had experienced until that point, and then the tragedy that he experienced — and that’s what the f— came out. [James] was like, ‘I love it.’ ”
Twinless is in theaters Sept. 5.
