Draymond Green criticizes NBA media for their harsh treatment of Nico Harrison, arguing the Mavericks’ former GM was right in his reasoning for trading Luka Doncic—and that the same critics now echo his concerns.

One year after the Dallas Mavericks shipped Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, the trade remains one of the most polarizing in recent NBA history. But according to Draymond Green, the backlash against then-Mavericks GM Nico Harrison was unfair—and the same media critics now echo Harrison’s original concerns.

During a recent episode of his podcast, Green didn’t hold back: “So many people crushed Nico for the reasons that he gave [for trading Doncic],” he said. “When Nico gave those reasons, everybody said, ‘He’s ridiculous, he’s crazy.’ Now, when I turn on the TV, all I see is the media that crushed Nico Harrison regurgitating the same things that Nico Harrison was saying.”

The Trade That Shook the NBA

Harrison’s decision to trade Doncic—a perennial MVP candidate—alongside Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a future first-round pick was met with outrage. Fans called for Harrison’s job, and analysts questioned the logic. Yet, as Green points out, the narrative has shifted. “I haven’t seen one person come out and say, ‘Hey Nico, I’m sorry for the things I said about you,’” he added.

Doncic’s Struggles in Los Angeles

The trade’s fallback lies in Doncic’s underwhelming tenure with the Lakers. While his 32.7 points, 8.6 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game remain elite, his defensive lapses and the Lakers’ inconsistent play have raised questions. Currently 24th in defensive net rating, the Lakers are clawing for relevance in a loaded Western Conference.

Doncic’s arrival was supposed to propel LA into title contention, but their 34-24 record masks deeper issues: a reliance on close-game luck and a roster that’s often outclassed by contenders like the Nuggets, Thunder, and Spurs.

Harrison’s Legacy and the Mavericks’ Future

Harrison paid the ultimate price, fired nine months after the trade. The Mavericks have since rebuilt, drafting Cooper Flagg—a Rookie of the Year contender—but their 21-38 record places them 12th in the West. Meanwhile, Anthony Davis was shipped to Washington in a deadline blockbuster, further complicating the trade’s long-term impact.

Why This Matters: Media Accountability in Sports

Green’s defense of Harrison taps into a broader conversation about media accountability. Criticism is part of the job, but few analysts have apologized for their takes—even as Harrison’s reasoning has proven prescient. The trade’s fallout serves as a reminder that hindsight isn’t just 20/20; it’s often a mirror held up to past judgments.

For the Mavericks, the trade was a gamble. For Harrison, it was a career-altering risk. For Doncic, it’s a chapter still being written. But as Green’s comments highlight, the real lesson might be in how quickly narratives change—and who gets left behind when they do.

The Verdict: Which Franchise Won the Trade?

  • Lakers: Acquired a superstar but lack defensive cohesion.
  • Mavericks: Rebuilding around Flagg, though struggles linger.

Neither team has emerged victorious—and that’s the irony Green’s spotlighting. The critics moved on. The players adapted. Harrison lost his job. And the trade? It’s still the NBA’s largest unresolved question.
