NEED TO KNOW

  • A key role from Blue Bloods has been confirmed to return for the Boston Blue spinoff, but a new actor will be taking it on

  • Sean Reagan — the youngest son of Donnie Wahlberg’s character, Danny Reagan — will be on the upcoming spinoff series, but he won’t be played by Andrew Terraciano

  • The role has been recast with Mika Amonsen now play Wahlberg’s TV son

The first of what might be many shakeups has arrived for Donnie Wahlberg’s Blue Bloods spinoff.

Boston Blue will see Wahlberg reprise his role as Danny Reagan in a brand-new city as he brings his New York City experience to Boston, and one member of his family is confirmed to be joining him in the relocation. However, it’s a different face than fans are used to.

Andrew Terraciano played Danny’s younger son Sean Reagan for all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods, but he will not return in the spinoff. Instead, Mika Amonsen has been cast as Sean in what will be a series regular role, PEOPLE can confirm.

Sean’s move to Boston will play a significant role in Danny’s storyline in the spinoff.

Sean was still in high school in the Blue Bloods finale, but it seems he might be aged up a bit in the spinoff.

Amonsen’s version of the character will see Sean as a patrolman for the Boston police department, where he will be committed to following in his family’s legacy but on his own terms.

With Danny also deciding to stay in Boston in the new series, he has a “chance to reconnect on a deeper level” with his younger son.

The cast will also include Sonequa Martin-Green as Lena Silver, Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver, Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver, Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver and Ernie Hudson as Reverend Peters.

When Blue Bloods wrapped, Terraciano said he “let” his character “go” after 15 years of playing Sean.

While the 22-year-old has not spoken out following the recasting news, he did reflect on his decade-plus as Sean Reagan as the CBS series wrapped up.

“It feels like, after 15 years, ‘family’ isn’t a big enough word for all of the people at Blue Bloods that have changed me, and helped me, and grown with me,” he wrote in a post from June 2024, when the show wrapped filming.

“I am so unbelievably grateful to every single person that has guided me and provided me with wisdom and lessons that I will hold with me. Though it would be another essay to explain just one of the lessons or inside jokes that we have, I will never forget what I learned on that set in Brooklyn – ‘Run fast, laugh hard, be kind.'”

“To the cast and crew, tell everyone you can how fantastic this was, because it was fantastic, and consider this a formal thank you to each and every one of you,” he continued. “I look forward to seeing everything you all go out and do. Sean Reagan, I let you go.”

After the finale aired in December, he wrote in another post that the show was a “fantastic ride and I loved every moment of it.”

It remains unclear what other familiar faces from Blue Bloods might make an appearance in Boston Blue.

Tom Selleck, who played Wahlberg’s dad Frank Reagan, is of particular interest among fans when it comes to the spinoff.

When asked about the possibility of Selleck making an appearance, Wahlberg, 55, told Parade, “New York and Boston are really close.”

Their proximity seems enough to hint that Selleck’s return is likely. “Blue Bloods is important to the audience, it’s important to me,” Wahlberg said.

“I’ll just say the journey of developing this show, it’s really fun letting Danny be a fish out of water, to be in this new world,” he continued. “It’s also important to remember where he comes from and what the Blue Bloods legacy is.”
