Dodgers’ Rotation Roulette: Why Health, Not Talent, Will Decide October

Dodgers’ Rotation Roulette: Why Health, Not Talent, Will Decide October

The Dodgers’ rotation is a health lottery: only Yamamoto and Glasnow are locks for Opening Day, while Sasaki’s raw talent keeps him in despite command issues, Ohtani’s WBC commitment delays his build-up, and a host of arms battle for the final spots in a race where October health is all that matters.

For the Los Angeles Dodgers, the path to a deep October run runs directly through the health of their starting rotation. As they prepare for the March 26 opener, the picture is stark: only two starters appear fully built-up and effective, while the rest of the group is clouded by injuries, slow recoveries, and raw potential.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Japanese ace who got an early spring start before leaving for the World Baseball Classic, and Tyler Glasnow, the oft-injured right-hander raving about his mechanics, are the only two seemingly ready to go full-bore from Day 1.

Beyond them, the situation is far more fluid. Blake Snell’s slow ramp-up and Gavin Stone’s shoulder setback have further complicated the mix, opening the door for a host of candidates to claim the final rotation spots.

Roki Sasaki: Talent Over Command

The second-year Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki is still penciled into the Dodgers’ Opening Day rotation, but his spring has been a study in frustration. In 3 ⅓ Cactus League innings, he’s walked five and allowed seven runs, his command clearly a work in progress.

Manager Dave Roberts has been blunt, noting that Sasaki is still developing as a big-league starter and “still needs to be coached.” Pitching coach Mark Prior remains confident, however, pointing to Sasaki’s recovery from a four-month shoulder injury last year and the final two innings of his recent start, where he retired six straight after a rocky first. “We talked about being internal versus external, and concentrating on compete mode,” Prior said. “And then he went out there and performed really well.”

Sasaki’s next test comes in a controlled environment: four innings in a backfield B-game next week, a step that should keep him on track for Opening Day. As Roberts noted, “You’re not going to always be synced up or the perfect mechanics. But you still have to give us length as a starting pitcher.”

That length is exactly what the Dodgers need from the 24-year-old, whose raw talent continues to outweigh his early-spring command woes. His ability to bounce back in-game, as he did after a four-run first, shows the mental fortitude that could make him a difference-maker in October.

Shohei Ohtani: A Delayed Start

While Sasaki is on the mound, Shohei Ohtani is still in Japan, serving as Team Japan’s designated hitter in the WBC. He won’t pitch in a spring game until after he returns from the tournament, leaving his build-up significantly behind schedule.

The Dodgers expect Ohtani to be ready for regular-season starts, but he’s unlikely to be fully stretched out by Opening Day. That means his first few outings could be short, potentially requiring another multi-inning option to piggyback with him. The team’s depth will be tested early.

Emmet Sheehan: Battling Back

Emmet Sheehan’s spring was slow to start due to an illness, and he didn’t make his Cactus League debut until Wednesday, tossing 1 ⅓ innings. The 26-year-old right-hander, back from Tommy John surgery last June, is hoping to be fully built up by Opening Day, but the clock is ticking.

Both Sheehan and Roberts expressed optimism, yet the Dodgers may need to plan for a slightly restricted workload for him early in the season, further increasing the need for reliable innings from others.

The Depth Chart: Candidates Emerge

With the rotation picture unsettled, several arms are vying for roles:

  • Justin Wrobleski: The left-hander excelled as a multi-inning reliever last season and is now being stretched out. He could serve as the No. 6 starter or as a long-relief piggyback option.
  • Cole Irvin: A six-year veteran who reinvented himself in the KBO, Irvin is an “interesting” lefty on a minor-league deal. However, a rough start Thursday—giving up three two-run homers—didn’t help his case. He remains a candidate for spot starts.
  • River Ryan: Perhaps the most intriguing wild card. The former top prospect, back from Tommy John surgery, has added 30 pounds during his recovery process last year, a transformation that has boosted his stuff. He has pitched well in two scoreless Cactus League outings with four strikeouts. “I thought he looked like a major-league pitcher today,” Roberts said. Ryan’s six-pitch arsenal has played up, but the Dodgers may save his bullets for later in the season, potentially starting him in Triple-A.

Ryan’s transformation is particularly notable. The added strength has seemingly revitalized his stuff, and his quick recovery has exceeded expectations. Yet, with his 2025 season completely lost to surgery, the club will be cautious with his workload.

Why It All Comes Down to October

No matter how the rotation shuffles in March, the Dodgers’ ultimate goal is a World Series title. And as the original article starkly notes, “all that’s likely to really matter is who is healthy come October.”

The current uncertainty is manageable in the short term—the Dodgers can use a six-man rotation, piggybacking, or call up Triple-A arms. But if injuries strike again, their championship window could slam shut swiftly. The pressure is on the medical and coaching staffs to navigate this spring’s minefield and have the group ready for the grueling postseason.

For fans, the anxiety is palpable. Sasaki’s command issues spark debates about his readiness; Ohtani’s two-way workload is a constant topic; and Ryan’s meteoric rise from surgery gives hope that the farm system can deliver. But all narratives fade if key arms break down.

The Dodgers’ front office has built a deep roster to absorb shocks, but even their depth has limits. The next few weeks will reveal whether they can piece together a rotation that can carry them through October—or if the health lottery will finally run out of luck.
