Hands-on: DJI's new Osmo Mobile 7P and its exciting Multifunctional Module

As reported by our sister site DroneDJ, DJI announced on Tuesday the new Osmo Mobile 7 gimbal series with two different models. I’ve been testing a lot of smartphone gimbals recently as vlogging has become a hobby for me. Luckily, I was invited by DJI to get my hands on the new Osmo Mobile 7P in advance – and it comes with an exciting new hardware feature.

Before getting into the hands-on, it’s important to note that Osmo Mobile 7P is a more premium version of the gimbal, while there’s a much more affordable version available. The one I have here is the premium version. I’ll detail the differences between them throughout this post.

The new DJI Osmo Mobile 7P

The DJI Osmo Mobile 7P comes in a very compact package. It includes the gimbal, a magnetic clamp for the phone, two USB-C cables, a storage pouch, and the new Multifunctional Module. While the cheaper Osmo Mobile 7 comes in light gray, the 7P version is all black.

The phone clamp can be magnetically attached to the gimbal, and the magnets are quite strong – so don’t worry about your phone falling off. DJI also has a MagSafe mount for iPhone owners, but it’s not included in the box. You need to buy it separately for $19 (and it’s not compatible with the new Multifunctional Module, unfortunately).

Setting up an Osmo Mobile gimbal is done via DJI’s Mimo app after pairing it with your phone via Bluetooth. The app has been updated with improvements for owners of the latest gimbals. For instance, it includes ActiveTrack 7.0 – the new version of the company’s object-tracking technology. The feature can now detect multiple subjects in a frame, allowing users to switch focus between them with just a tap.

DJI’s gimbals never disappoint when it comes to stabilization, and the company says that the three-axis stabilization technology has become even better. In my tests recording while walking, the video shot on an iPhone 16 Pro Max was very stable and the movements very smooth. Another thing I like is the built-in selfie-stick, perfect for recording yourself.

What is the Multifunctional Module?

But one of the highlights of the Osmo Mobile 7P is the Multifunctional Module that comes included with the gimbal. This small module can be magnetically attached to the phone clamp and extends the product’s capabilities.

The module has its own tracking sensor, which means you no longer need the DJI app to take advantage of the company’s object-tracking technology. The sensor is able to detect subjects and control the gimbal’s movements regardless of the camera app you’re using on your phone. I did some tests here using the Apple Camera app on the iPhone and the system works as expected.

The Multifunctional Module also includes a light with adjustable brightness and color temperature. The brightness level impressed me the most. The light is good enough to help you get a decent shot even in a dark environment. My only complaint is that the module gets very hot and drains the battery when the light is on.

Another great advantage of the module is that it pairs directly with the Mic Mini’s transmitter, so you can capture high-quality audio directly from it. It basically makes life much easier for filmmarkers.

More tidbits

The controls for moving the gimbal are quite simple and intuitive, which I like. Sometimes less is more. The Osmo Mobile 7P also works as a power bank for your phone via the USB-C port. Moreover, the gimbal has a built-in tripod.

DJI promises up to 10 hours of battery life on a single charge, but this only applies when you don’t use the Multifunctional Module.

On a related note, I’ve also had the chance to try out the DJI Mic Mini microphones and they’re by far one of the best portable wireless microphones I’ve ever used. The audio is super clean and high quality.

Update: Following questions from our readers, the DJI Osmo Mobile 7 and 7P do not support Apple’s DockKit or fast pairing via the new iOS API. This is a great convenience offered by some competing gimbals and I hope to see it in DJI products soon.

Is the new DJI Osmo Mobile 7P worth buying?

As I said before, DJI is known for making great products, and it’s no different with the new Osmo Mobile 7P. If you’re looking for a good gimbal to make your videos look more professional, you should definitely give the new Osmo a try.

With Osmo Mobile 7P, DJI delivers a good mix of build quality, ease of use, and accessories that will enhance the experience.

The Osmo Mobile 7P costs $149. There’s also the regular Osmo Mobile 7, which costs just $89 – but it doesn’t have a selfie-stick and the dial for adjusting zoom and light. The more affordable version also doesn’t have the Multifunctional Module included, but you can buy one separately for $49.
