The Duffers leave Eleven’s fate ambiguous, tease a spinoff, and reveal the future of the Stranger Things universe.
Warning: This article contains spoilers from the Stranger Things series finale, “The Rightside Up.”
The creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, have finally addressed the burning question on every fan’s mind: Did Eleven die in the series finale? The answer, much like the show itself, is shrouded in mystery. The Duffers, who have been meticulously planning the conclusion of the worldwide television sensation for years, sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the fate of Millie Bobby Brown’s character and reveal hints at the upcoming live-action spinoff.
The Ambiguity of Eleven’s Fate
The Duffers spent more time discussing Eleven’s fate than any other aspect of the final season. The dialogue in the finale reflects the debates they had in the writers’ room. Hopper’s speech to Eleven expresses one side of the argument, while Kali’s perspective represents the other. The creators wanted to leave enough evidence on both sides to allow fans to argue one way or the other.
“We wanted it to be from Mike’s point of view and the kids’ point of view,” Matt Duffer explained. “So they don’t know, and because they don’t know, the audience doesn’t know. If we knew and they knew, then it defeats the entire purpose of her sacrifice.”
The Final Scene and Its Significance
The final scene, shot in Iceland, was a significant moment for the creators. It was Millie Bobby Brown’s last day on set, and the Duffers wanted to make it special. The scene was shot with a skeleton crew and featured a real rainbow, adding to the magical atmosphere.
“It was really cool,” Matt Duffer said. “It was on location in Iceland, but it was a skeleton crew. It was all Icelandic, and we were out there maybe for four hours or so. Millie was actually standing right there out on the cliff. It’s fun shooting in other countries because out here, they forced us to wire her, but Millie was a badass. She just stood there. We had a drone flying over her. It was beautiful.”
The Mind Flayer and the Mysterious Substance
The Mind Flayer’s true form and the mysterious substance found by Henry Creel in the flashback have been topics of much speculation among fans. The Duffers revealed that the glowing rock substance is a question mark they purposely left open, which will be answered in the upcoming spinoff.
“We do have a specific definition for what exactly was in that briefcase,” Ross Duffer said. “It is the one thing that we purposely left a bit of a question mark on that theoretically will be answered later down the line. But that really was the one tiny little crack in the door that we wanted to leave open.”
The Future of Stranger Things
The Duffers have a clear vision for the future of the Stranger Things universe. They are currently focused on the live-action spinoff, which will answer the question of the mysterious substance and introduce a new mythology. They are also involved in other projects, including an animated series and a Broadway show.
“To us, it’s just one step at a time,” Matt Duffer said. “Right now, everything you said is all we have planned…Well, there’s one other thing I can’t talk about, so I just sort of lied to you, that is also really cool. But the live-action spinoff is what the main focus is right now.”
The Duffers are committed to being deeply involved in the Stranger Things spinoff, ensuring it lives up to the high standards set by the original series. They are excited to create new characters and a new mythology, starting from the ground floor.
