Late singer David Cassidy‘s children, Beau Cassidy and Katie Cassidy, honored their father at a unique fan event held on July 30 and 31.
ReMind Magazine reported that during the event, a street in West Orange, New Jersey, was named David Cassidy Way. According to the publication, David, who died in 2017 at the age of 67, resided near said street in West Orange with his parents, Jack Cassidy and Evelyn Ward, during his childhood. Following Ward and Jack’s 1956 divorce, Ward and David went out west to California.
On July 30, Beau and Katie spoke to ReMind Magazine about the significance of West Orange in their father’s life. According to Beau, “West Orange was one of the most important places and most important of times in my dad’s life and I would argue it was probably one of the happiest times of his life.”
With emotion in his voice, Beau said, “To know that he left a mark in a kind of way, where the place that he grew up would show so much pride over who he was and what he meant to a community, carries a deeper meaning for me.”
“I don’t think he would have imagined this is what would happen in terms of his legacy, because I always felt, in his own mind, that he downplayed his legacy and downplayed what he meant,” continued Beau while speaking to the publication. “So, to know that the place where he grew up, and the place where he had the best memories, is proud enough to commemorate him like this. I don’t think that there’s anything he would be more proud of.”
Katie also shared she appreciated the fans who attended the two-day event, which included an emotional dedication ceremony, a motorcade, a viewing of Henry Diltz’s photos of David, plenty of merchandise tables, David’s music, and a photo-op with a cut-out of the Partridge Family bus.
“This is incredible. It’s so great to see everybody who loved my dad. This is just a beautiful experience and it would mean everything to my dad. I’m just really proud and honored. The fans are incredible,” said Katie during the ReMind Magazine interview.
Katie opened about her dynamic with her father, who famously starred as Keith Partridge in The Partridge Family from 1970 to 1974, in a February 2022 episode of the Inside of You podcast. Katie said that while she was close to her father when she was younger, she eventually stepped away from their relationship due to his struggles with alcohol.
“Once I was 24, maybe 25, it just wasn’t healthy for me because he was struggling with alcohol,” said the 38-year-old during the podcast interview.
The Supernatural actress said, however, that she visited David in the hospital with other members of his family before his death.
