David Beckham is defending his team.
The Inter Miami co-owner pushed back on social media over the weekend, after Minnesota United defeated Lionel Messi’s MLS team 4-1 on Saturday, May 10.
“Show a little respect @mnufc be elegant in triumph,” Beckham, 50, wrote in the comments, after Minnesota described Inter Miami as the “Pink Phony Club.”
Beckham’s comment raised eyebrows among followers, and drew hundreds of replies.
“Y’all are feelin sassy today and I’m here for it,” one commenter wrote, while another took seeming satisfaction in Miami’s demise: “As an @orlandocitysc fan, this is absolutely hilarious.”
For Minnesota, the unexpected feedback from Beckham seemingly prompted the team to post another provocative claim at the expense of Miami.

In a separate post, the franchise’s feed shared an image of a banner that read, “History over hype, culture over cash,” with the words “hype” and “cash” highlighted in Miami-kit pink.
“Respect over everything 🩷 @mnufc” Beckham responded.
The soccer legend’s comments come amid reports of acrimony in the Beckham family.
A source told PEOPLE last week that David and wife Victoria Beckham currently have a strained relationship with their eldest son, Brooklyn, and his wife Nicola Peltz Beckham.
“There are tensions between Brooklyn and Nicola and the family,” the insider shared. “The relationship is definitely not beyond repair. They love and are always there for him. They’re just hurt and disappointed that he’s now playing no part in family life.”
In an interview published on Saturday, May 10 in The Sunday Times, the 26-year-old credited his father for his love of racing.

“It’s something that me and my dad bonded over. My dad’s had some pretty cool cars,” Brooklyn told the outlet, adding that he collects them with his favorite being a “1954 Jaguar, which I very rarely drive, only when the weather’s perfect.”
PEOPLE previously learned that Brooklyn and Nicola were not in attendance at David’s star-studded 50th birthday party in early May, as siblings Romeo, 22, Cruz, 20, and Harper, 13, helped mark the milestone.
