After a resilient 16-year career defined by elite shooting, blockbuster trades, and incredible perseverance, Danilo Gallinari has announced his retirement from the NBA. The former lottery pick known as “Il Gallo” (The Rooster) leaves the game not only as a journeyman who contributed to eight different franchises but as the most prolific Italian scorer in NBA history, cementing a legacy that transcends box scores and highlights his impact on the international growth of the game.

The journey has officially come to an end. Danilo Gallinari, the sharpshooting Italian forward whose career spanned nearly two decades and involved some of the most memorable trades in recent NBA history, announced his retirement on Tuesday. At 37 years old, Gallinari closes a chapter that began with the bright lights of Madison Square Garden and concluded with a championship run, albeit not in the league where he made his name.

From Lottery Pick to Trade Centerpiece

Selected sixth overall by the New York Knicks in the 2008 NBA Draft, Gallinari was part of a young core that brought hope back to the franchise. His combination of size and shooting touch made him an instant fan favorite. However, his most significant act as a Knick was his departure. In 2011, he became a key component in the blockbuster three-team trade that sent superstar Carmelo Anthony to New York, landing Gallinari with the Denver Nuggets.

It was in Denver that “Gallo” truly hit his stride, becoming a primary offensive weapon and averaging over 16 points per game across six seasons. His tenure there was marked by both brilliance and heartbreak. He suffered the first of two devastating ACL tears in 2013, forcing him to miss the entire 2013-14 season.

A Journeyman’s Path Defined by Resilience

Gallinari’s career became a testament to his toughness and adaptability. After his time in Denver, he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, where he continued to be a productive scorer. But his journey as a pivotal trade asset was far from over. In 2019, he was once again at the center of a league-altering deal, sent to the Oklahoma City Thunder alongside a treasure trove of draft picks and a young Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the trade for Paul George.

His post-OKC career saw him provide veteran scoring for the Atlanta Hawks for two seasons before his body betrayed him again. After being traded to the Boston Celtics, he suffered a second ACL tear to the same knee while playing for the Italian national team, an injury confirmed by Yahoo Sports. He never played a single game for Boston. His final NBA campaign in 2023-24 was a whirlwind tour with the Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons, and Milwaukee Bucks.

A Champion’s Farewell and a Lasting Legacy

While an NBA title eluded him, Gallinari didn’t end his professional career without a taste of championship glory. He most recently played for Vaqueros de Bayamón in Puerto Rico’s top league, leading the team to a title and earning Finals MVP honors—a fitting final act for a relentless competitor.

Gallinari retires as the second-highest drafted Italian player in NBA history, behind only 2006’s No. 1 pick Andrea Bargnani. More importantly, he walks away as the highest-scoring Italian player ever, finishing his NBA career with 11,607 points, a record confirmed by the official league stats. For fans, he’ll be remembered not just for his silky-smooth jumper, but for his resilience in the face of career-threatening injuries and his unique place in the transaction history of the modern NBA.
