NEED TO KNOW

  • Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona costar as two women whose marriages grow complicated in the trailer for their new movie Splitsville

  • Johnson and Arjona costar with screenwriter duo Kyle Marvin and Michael Angelo Covino, who directed the movie, as two couples who explore nonmonogamy after Marvin’s character Carey “crosses the line and throws all of their relationships into chaos”

  • Splitsville releases in select theaters Aug. 22 and everywhere Sept. 5

Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona are at opposite ends of two collapsing marriages in the trailer for their new comedy.

On Monday, June 23, Neon released the trailer for Splitsville, which follows two couples who explore non-monogamy — and face a variety of consequences — after one couple begins to reckon with a possible divorce.

The trailer meets Arjona’s character Ashley telling her husband Carey (Kyle Marvin) that she wants to divorce and has cheated on him; in response, he seeks out his friends Julie (Johnson) and Paul (writer-director Michael Angelo Covino) for advice and learns that they have embarked on an open marriage.

After learning about his friends’ open marriage, Carey and Julie hook up — but Paul grows incredibly angry upon learning so, throwing all four characters’ friendships and relationships with each other into question. As the trailer shows, physical fights, arguments and car crashes ensue.

“After Ashley asks for a divorce, good-natured Carey (Marvin) runs to his friends, Julie and Paul (Covino), for support,” reads an official synopsis for the movie. “He’s shocked to discover that the secret to their happiness is an open marriage, that is until Carey crosses the line and throws all of their relationships into chaos.” The movie’s cast also features Succession alum Nicholas Braun, as well as David Castañeda and O-T Fagbenle.

Splitsville marks Johnson’s second romance-themed movie of the year after the more dramatic Materialists opened in theaters June 13. The film, which made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, is written by Marvin and Covino; it marks their second time as a screenwriting duo who star in their own movies after 2019’s The Climb. For Arjona, the movie is her first film role of 2025; she most recently reprised her Star Wars role in the second season of Disney’s series Andor.

Splitsville releases in select theaters Aug. 22 and hits theaters everywhere Sept. 5.
