Even without a broomstick, Cynthia Erivo defied gravity at the 2025 Met Gala, where she glided over the red carpet in a pair of towering heels and a look that winked to the colors of the Oz universe.
The Wicked star arrived to the fashion event wearing a sculptural look from Givenchy that consisted of a corset-style bodice that was covered in silver gems and ruby-red pieces.
Throughout the last year, Erivo has been winking to her Elphaba role with a series of green-hued fits. But this latest dress seemed to reference something else from the world of Oz—those ruby red slippers that her character just can’t stop chasing in the 1939 Wizard of Oz film.
As for the rest of the look, Erivo’s dress featured a billowing tulle skirt that was open in the front, revealing the actor’s lace-up platform heels, which were also adorned with some matching red gems. With her majestic black skirt, Erivo looked like she could float into the sky at any moment, and that color seemed to be a nod to Elphaba’s uniform too.
The Oscar-nominated actor has worn Givenchy to many red carpets of late, including the 31st annual Screen Actors Guild Award, where her silver ensemble channeled the Tin Man more than it did the Wicked Witch. Then, she also repped the brand at the Academy Awards Nominees Dinner, where she stepped out in a silky long coat from the Givenchy archives, pulled straight from the brand’s Spring 1998 Haute Couture collection.
This is certainly not Erivo’s first Met Gala rodeo, though. Prior to tonight, the Harriet star had been to the gala a total of six times, most recently at 2024’s “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” event. There, she wore a pink petal-covered dress from Thom Browne, with insect-like accoutrements adoring the entire design, and a dragonfly-shaped brooch being fastened to the back of her head.
As she arrived to the carpet, Erivo walked hand-in-hand with her Wicked co-star, Ariana Grande, who wore a structural ivory look from Loewe, with dove-like details pasted on her eyelashes. This year, Erivo walked the steps all on her own, but she.
