After a nearly two-year wait, the latest installment of the period drama came chugging into our lives on June 22, with new episodes set to air weekly on Sundays through August 10. The Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey)-created series has been met with critical acclaim throughout its run, with season three receiving the best reviews yet. And following the longest hiatus between seasons, anticipation for new episodes has only grown with time.
But while season three is only just underway, many fans are wondering whether they can expect more in the future. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been an official renewal, but there’s a good chance this isn’t the end of The Gilded Age. Ahead, find out everything we know about season four.

In the past, HBO has been quick to renew The Gilded Age. After getting a straight-to-series order in 2019, the show premiered in January 2022 and was renewed for another season only a month later. Meanwhile, when the second installment premiered, the show was renewed again mere days after the finale.
So, if history is any indication, we will likely hear news of a fourth season renewal sometime in August, around the time that season three will be coming to a close (if, hopefully, it gets one).

At this point, no details have been released regarding a potential season four. But if the show continues to follow its current timeline, the fourth season will likely take place sometime in the late 1880s.
In the third installment of the period drama, things pick up right where they left off in season two. Mrs. Russell continues her slow but steady takeover of the New York City elite, a plan which involves promising her daughter’s hand to someone who she doesn’t love. Marian has begun a secret relationship with Larry Russell, and Peggy is dealing with her own complicated romantic feelings while trying to further her career. Meanwhile, in the wake of Ada receiving a large sum of money from her late husband, she and Agnes have suddenly found their positions of power swapped in their household.
Only time will tell how these stories play out, but one thing’s for sure: There will be plenty to build upon if the show gets renewed for a fourth season.
What has the creator said about season four?
Creator Julian Fellowes has stated that he doesn’t have an exact plan for The Gilded Age past season three, and the future of the show will depend on whether it gets renewed or not.
“We knew where we wanted to go at the end of the [third] season, and so then we reverse engineered it to build up to that,” co-showrunner Sonja Warfield told TV Insider in a joint interview with Fellowes.
“I don’t think we do have a final stopping place because we’re not told there’ll be a fourth series or a fifth or whatever,” Fellowes added. “But each time you have to reinvent the show in order to give it a new dynamic to fit its new proportions. And I think that is part of our job. That’s part of what you do if you write a series for television. So in a sense, each [season] has to have a satisfactory conclusion given what’s taken place within the series, but an open end where we may be going to, and that is the sort of double discipline that we write to really.”
In the same interview, some of the shows stars, like Carrie Coon, expressed their interest in another installment. We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed.
