NEED TO KNOW

  • A bride shared online that she and her fiancé planned to have a vegetarian buffet with “samosas, spring rolls, savoury cakes, verrines [and] club sandwiches”

  • However, her parents told her they thought it was “selfish” for her to not have any meat options for guests and that they would be “disappointed”

  • The bride said she only considered making “an exception on some locally sourced fish” since she and her fiancé did eat it “from time to time”

A couple is opting for a vegetarian-only wedding reception against their parents’ wishes.

A Redditor shared in an online post on the “Wedding Planning” Reddit forum that she planned to have a vegetarian buffet for her and her fiancé’s “intimate” nuptials in October — a choice that upset her parents.

The bride noted that their fiancé had “been a vegetarian for the last twelve years” and she had been eating vegetarian-only food for three years. She planned to reflect their love for vegetarian food by making a buffet filled with “samosas, spring rolls, savoury cakes, verrines, club sandwiches etc…”

“The problem is, my parents think it’s selfish to not serve meat and even threatened to not come if there is no meat to eat,” the bride shared. “[My parents] even added that our friends will be disappointed by the food as they are mostly meat eaters too.”

She said that she was torn by this as she didn’t want to “serve any meat” since it was against her “values,” but she also didn’t want to disappoint her wedding party or come off as “an a——” if she didn’t have any meat options.

While meat was out of the question, the bride did note that she would consider making “an exception on some locally sourced fish” since they did eat it “from time to time” — sometimes about three times a year.

Several people agreed with the bride, with one person commenting that it was “totally fine to serve an all vegetarian menu, just make sure you’ve got plenty of protein and enough food so people can be full.”

Another person agreed, saying, “as long as [the food is] filling with substantial protein and dietary restrictions/allergies are accommodated, a vegetarian wedding is appropriate.”

“You are both vegetarian, I think it’s fully fair to have a vegetarian wedding,” another person commented. “As long as it’s both filling, and approachable cuisine for your guests, I wouldn’t really think twice about it as a guest.”

Several other people also warned the bride against self-catering, with one person writing, “I highly, highly encourage you not to cater your own wedding. You want to be able to enjoy your day, not be working during the whole event and the days leading up to it.”

Another chimed in saying, “a caterer can also handle any dietary restrictions for your guests. Vegans? Then can adjust. Gluten-free? Covered.”
