NEED TO KNOW

  • Count Chocula, Boo Berry and Franken Berry are being reimagined as puppets on new limited-edition cereal boxes

  • General Mills partnered with the Jim Henson Company for the latter’s 70th anniversary this year

  • The characters’ puppet versions can be seen come to life in a playful video

Count Chocula, Boo Berry and Franken Berry are getting a fuzzy makeover.

The iconic cereal mascots are being reimagined as puppets as part of a collaboration between General Mills and the Jim Henson Company, which turns 70 this year, according to a press release exclusively shared with PEOPLE.

The three characters, who make up the Monsters Cereal lineup, are each in their signature look: Count Chocula sports his brown cape, Boo Berry wears his yellow hat and red bow-tie, and Franken Berry is decked out in his monochrome strawberry-pink ensemble.

A playful video of “press day with the cereal monsters” shows the three characters come to life. “You look amazing!” Count Chocula exclaims. Franken Berry declares, “I’ve never seen you look better. Stunning!”

“You look handsome!” Count Chocola says, before it’s revealed the characters are talking to their own reflections in a mirror. “You are a pretty, pretty monster,” Franken Berry tells himself.

Boo Berry then pops up behind the pair, scaring them away. The blue ghost sighs and wonders, “Was it something I said?”

The limited-edition cereals will be available to buy starting in August. The back of each box will offer a closer look at how the Jim Henson’s Creature Shop team created the new puppet versions of the beloved monsters.

And beginning on Oct. 7, fans can also get their hands on a special collectors’ item: a fuzzy Franken Berry cereal box, available exclusively on Walmart.com for $7.70. The box features a “tactile twist” that aims to mimic the soft, fleece-like texture of the puppets.

Boo Berry and Count Chocula cereal

Count Chocula, Boo Berry and Franken Berry made their debut in the early 1970s, and were inspired by classic horror film vampires and Frankenstein, according to General Mills’ website.

The company now brings the three cereals back each year as a nostalgic treat for Halloween.

Count Chocula features chocolate-flavored cereal with marshmallow bits. Boo Berry offers a fruity twist with blueberry flavor, while Franken Berry puts a strawberry spin on the cereal.
