Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson and more set foot on a deadly contest in The Long Walk.
On Wednesday, May 7, Lionsgate released the first trailer for The Long Walk, an adaptation of Stephen King’s 1979 novel, which follows a group of 100 teen boys who enter the titular contest and must walk 3 miles per hour without stopping until only one participant remains.
The trailer sees Hoffman’s character Ray Garratty meet other contest participants like McVries (Jonsson, 31) as they prepare to set off on the contest, which is overseen by a TV camera crew and a group of soldiers led by a character known only as the Major (Mark Hamill.)
When one participant falls behind and can’t get back up, he only receives three quick warnings before a soldier shoots and kills him.
A synopsis describes The Long Walk as “an intense, chilling and emotional thriller that challenges audiences to confront a haunting question: How far could you go?”

The new King adaptation is directed by Francis Lawrence, who’s best known for helming The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and the franchise’s three subsequent films, as well as its upcoming 2026 entry Sunrise on the Reaping. J.T. Mollner (Strange Darling) adapted the novel for the big screen.

Mark Hamill in The Long Walk
A synopsis for King’s 1979 novel, which he wrote while in college in the 1960s, reads something akin to a Hunger Games novel: “In the near future, where America has become a police state, one hundred boys are selected to enter an annual contest where the winner will be awarded whatever he wants for the rest of his life.”
The Long Walk‘s cast includes Ben Wang (Karate Kid: Legends) and Charlie Plummer, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Roman Griffin Davis, Jordan Gonzalez, Joshua Odjick, Josh Hamilton and Judy Greer. The film marks the second of Hamill’s back-to-back screen projects based on King’s novels after The Life of Chuck, which is out June 6.
The Long Walk is in theaters Sept. 12.
