Connie Britton is spilling what it was really like to work with Kyle Chandler on Friday Night Lights.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live on Monday, May 5, Britton, 58, reflected on some of her previous TV roles prior to appearing on The White Lotus season 1 in 2021. During the episode, she revealed that her Friday Night Lights costar and on-screen husband Kyle Chandler actually really hated doing table reads.

When asked to describe what table reads were like with Chandler, 59, the actress told host Andy Cohen, “I think [Kyle] probably said that he wasn’t going to do it.”

“Kyle has notoriously always hated table reads,” Britton revealed. “And the truth of the matter is with that show we didn’t really do table reads because it was really just like — we kind of just got into it and did it, and it was on your feet and the whole thing.”

Instead of doing regular table reads, it seems the cast adjusted to the script on the fly, though Britton notes that if there were certain snags, there would be discussions on set.

“We would sit down together and talk things through, but I don’t remember like an official studio table read,” she recalled.

Britton appeared on Friday Night Lights as Tami Taylor, the wife to high school football coach Eric Taylor (Chandler). The pair starred in all five seasons of the series, netting Britton two Emmy nominations and one win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

In a March interview with Parade, Britton revealed that she almost turned down the role after appearing in the 2004 movie of the same name.

“In the film there was very little for me to do, even less so by the time it came out,” Britton told the outlet about portraying Sharon Gaines in the sports biopic led by Billy Bob Thornton. “Whatever I had done was mostly on the cutting room floor. When the TV show came around I said, ‘No thank you.’ “

She said she wanted to be more than a “fly-on-the-wall wife character in a football show,” though the show’s writer and creator Peter Berg ultimately convinced her to change her mind. As a result, Britton said working with Chandler was an important moment in her career.

“I could have never imagined that I would find this acting partner who had the same aspirations for the kind of couple that we wanted to portray and was willing to commit to that so deeply,” she shared.

While on Watch What Happens Live, Britton also revealed her first TV acting role as a series regular was Spin City, appearing alongside Michael J. Fox.

“Literally I had no idea what I was doing — I’d never been on TV before, except for like I did a couple episodes of Ellen,” Britton confessed. “And so basically Michael J Fox taught me how to be in front of a camera.”
