Coldplay’s Chris Martin Reveals Shocking Fact About Band’s Mega-Hit Song in Resurfaced Interview originally appeared on Parade.
Coldplay is one of those bands that everyone knows. While there are definitely some deep cuts in their extensive discography, they also have some massive hits. When a Coldplay song really hits, you’ll find it everywhere.
For example: “Yellow.” Arguably one of Coldplay’s biggest hits, and the personal favorite of many, this song is one everyone knows. It’s everywhere, across all generations. While everyone might know it, not a lot of people know how it really came to be:
“Yellow,” which was released in 2000, has amassed billions of streams across all music platforms. It’s also been featured in TV and films regularly since then. It’s become a classic, and yet, Chris Martin claims it only took him 10 minutes to write the smash hit.
In his interview on the Howard Stern Show, Coldplay’s frontman says he was in his early 20s, and that it didn’t come as some fantastic breakthrough. Instead, he was actually just poking fun: “I was waiting to record something else, and I was just starting to do a Neil Young impression just to make everyone giggle.”
The song came together in 10 minutes, Chris Martin claims, and he “just had a feeling” that it was going to be a big hit. He was right: 25 years later and Coldplay is currently on their biggest tour to date, with “Yellow” still making it onto the setlist!
