Christina Applegate had a recent health scare that forced her to record a podcast episode from her hospital bed.
“Hello, everybody. Welcome to ‘MeSsy,’ live from a hospital room in Los Angeles, California,” Jamie-Lynn Sigler said during the intro of the duo’s Tuesday, August 5, podcast episode. “Perhaps the first ever podcast live from a fancy schmancy hospital, starring my partner in crime, Christina Applegate.”
Applegate, 53, clarified that she’s “not doing a podcast from the hospital because I felt like doing one from the hospital was an awesome idea.” The actress told listeners that “things are messy, but I’m going to be OK,” before explaining what sent her to the hospital.
“I went to Europe to see family, and I was not feeling good the whole time I was there. Not the kind of bad where I had missed days, it would just be up and down,” she shared. “I’d be OK for a couple hours, and then I’d be having to go lay down because my stomach was really bad.”

Applegate wasn’t “feeling good” when she returned to California following an “11-hour” flight. So, she decided to go to the hospital.
“I was like, ‘I’m going to go, and I’m not leaving there until I have some f***ing answers,” she added. “Think outside the box. Don’t just leave me there, give me meds and say, ‘You feel better now, you’re going home.’ I want to know why this is happening and I want it to stop so that I don’t have to keep coming here.”
Applegate noted that the “universe works in a really beautiful way,” before detailing going straight from the airport to the hospital. One day after getting admitted, Applegate said she started feeling pain “on my right side, in my back.” Initially, she assumed it was her appendix. (Applegate went public with her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2021.)
“From my back to my front is in so much pain. I’m screaming and they ordered me an emergency CT at 2:00 in the morning,” she recalled. “I went in and got a CT, and I had kidney infections. So, I’m here because of this kidney infection and I have to have intravenous antibiotics right now. That’s where we’re at.”

Applegate noted that doctors think it “could be something else,” but didn’t disclose it with listeners.
“I don’t want to say what they think, because I don’t want it to sound scary, but I’m just going to be here,” she said. Sigler, 44, clarified that Applegate had “no answers” at the time that they recorded the podcast episode.
“They’re saying it could be from — here you guys go, makes me even more sexy, a UTI — which is so weird. Like, what am I, am I back wiping? Like seriously, I’m 53,” Applegate continued. “I have like, so here we go, the cleanest vagina. … I’m a clean girl down yonder.”
