Chris Pratt recalls wanting to get ‘much fatter’ on “Parks and Rec”: ‘It became like a challenge’

Chris Pratt says the role of lovable goofball Andy Dwyer on Parks and Recreation came along during a “season of my life where I was drinking and eating a lot.”

On a recent episode of Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast, Pratt discussed his relationship with food as his career progressed.

Before he landed Parks and Rec, Pratt noted that he had also stopped working out. As a result, the Jurassic World star said the employment opportunities began to dry up.

When he joined the sitcom, Pratt said he’d “never seen myself look so fat,” but that he was the “funniest I think I’ve ever been.” As a result, he set out to gain more weight for the role.

“I went to the showrunner, Mike Schur, and I said, ‘Two things. One, I’m getting fat. Two, I want to get much fatter,'” Pratt said. “And he goes, ‘Great.’ And so I just pushed it. I was like, ‘How fat can I get?’ It became like a challenge. I was, like, eating four burgers at mealtime. I was really impressing everybody and I was really diving into this super indulgent season in my life.”

The Terminal List actor shared that, on the one hand, it was “the best” to eat whatever he wanted during that time, but on the other hand, he also felt “terrible” after a while.

Pratt later underwent a highly publicized physical transformation when he took on the leading role of Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. He trained for the part in the sci-fi action flick while on Parks and Rec. The weight loss was explained at the top of season 6 as Andy quitting beer.

Meanwhile, Pratt said eating nowadays is “boring” as he mostly consumes vegetables, chicken, and rice, and compared mealtime to “stopping at the gas station” and putting the bare minimum in the tank.

“But in the interim, which is a lot more percentage-wise of the time of the day, I feel pretty good,” he said. “Like, I feel like I’m not processing s—ty foods and sugars and all that stuff.”
