Chris Pratt’s ‘Mercy’ Role: Unpacking the LAPD Training That Staggered the Star

Chris Pratt is stepping into arguably his most emotionally demanding role yet in the upcoming thriller ‘Mercy’, where he portrays an LAPD homicide detective. While known for his action-packed performances, Pratt recently revealed that the toughest aspect of preparing for the film wasn’t the stunts, but the profound emotional toll of hearing real-life trauma from law enforcement officers during his immersive training.

Hollywood star Chris Pratt is set to captivate audiences in the highly anticipated thriller ‘Mercy’, where he takes on the challenging role of an LAPD detective. The film, directed by Timur Bekmambetov, promises a unique blend of high-stakes drama, sci-fi elements, and pulse-pounding action. However, what has truly resonated with fans and critics alike is Pratt’s profound dedication to authenticity, particularly his intense immersion with real-world law enforcement.

Pratt’s character is thrust into a desperate race against time to clear his name after being accused of murdering his wife. The plot centers on his intense 90-minute quest to unravel the truth using an advanced AI investigative system, blending high-stakes drama with a futuristic edge, as initially reported by People magazine.

The Unseen Toll: Emotional Preparation Beyond Physical Stunts

While Chris Pratt is no stranger to physically demanding roles, from guarding the galaxy to hunting dinosaurs, he revealed that his preparation for ‘Mercy’ presented a different kind of challenge. During an appearance at New York Comic Con on October 9, 2025, Pratt spoke extensively about his hands-on experience with the Los Angeles Police Department’s homicide division.

“I had an opportunity to work with the LAPD and their homicide division, so I was able to go down and talk to those guys,” Pratt shared. This direct interaction was crucial for understanding the realities faced by officers. He also engaged in significant stunt work alongside the police, including driving police vehicles and participating in choreographed bar fight scenes, which he described as “really incredible.”

However, it was the emotional weight, not the physical exertion, that truly impacted him. Pratt emphasized, “The majority of the difficulty was just kind of hearing some of these stories and wow, it’s a real testament. Like we kind of take it for granted here we are in New York City, but there’s a homicide detective out there right now working a homicide. We don’t really see much about that necessarily in the news, but man, these guys are heroes and the trouble that they encounter and the trauma they see on a day-to-day basis is really, really staggering.” This sentiment was echoed across various reports, including by Social News.xyz.

Connecting Pratt’s Dedication to His Filmography

For fans of Chris Pratt, this deep dive into character preparation is a testament to his evolving range as an actor. While blockbuster franchises like Guardians of the Galaxy showcased his charm and action prowess, roles in films like ‘Mercy’ highlight his commitment to emotional depth and realistic portrayal. His acknowledgment of the unseen heroism and daily trauma faced by homicide detectives adds a significant layer of respect and authenticity to his performance.

This dedication also extends to technical details. Pratt reportedly requested to be physically confined in the futuristic chair used for his character’s 90-minute murder trial scenes. “I asked them to confine me in it,” Pratt stated, explaining he was cuffed at his feet and hands, and even his head for certain moments, to genuinely convey the feeling of being strapped down. This level of method acting ensures a visceral experience for the audience, further enhancing the film’s gritty realism.

Anticipation for ‘Mercy’ and its Release

‘Mercy’ is poised to be a compelling addition to Pratt’s filmography, promising an intense narrative where his character must navigate a high-tech system to prove his innocence before time runs out. The film also features talent like Kali Reis, Annabelle Wallis, and Rebecca Ferguson, further raising anticipation for its release.

Produced by Amazon MGM Studios, ‘Mercy’ is set to hit theaters on January 23, 2026. With Chris Pratt’s commitment to portraying the profound realities of law enforcement, fans can expect a powerful and authentic thriller that resonates far beyond its action sequences.
