A cop assigned to progressive Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s security detail is being punished for allegedly showing up to work while still drunk from partying to celebrate President Trump’s return to the White House, it has emerged.
Josue Najera, 44, was scheduled to work the 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. shift guarding the mayor’s home on Jan. 20 but was suspected of being under the influence when he showed up, according to internal records obtained by the Chicago Tribune.
He had earlier been at an inauguration viewing event held at Trump Tower on the Chicago River.
At roughly 7 p.m. that night, Najera had allegedly asked a uniformed on-duty cop if he could take a seat in the officer’s squad car.
When the officer refused, Najera called up the 18th District station to lodge a complaint against his colleague, prompting the duty supervisor there to contact Najera’s sergeant.
After Najera arrived for his shift, he was “agitated, speaking loudly and avoiding eye contact” when his sergeant started questioning him about the earlier saga.
“His behavior was very uncharacteristic and erratic from the normal behavior [the sergeant] knows PO Najera to display,” the report stated.
“[The sergeant] asked PO Najera if he had been drinking while at the Trump Tower [party] and he said he was having fun with his family… [The sergeant] again asked if PO Najera had anything to drink and PO Najera answered in the affirmative – yes.”
The cop ended up blowing .134 on a breathalyzer test and was forced to turn in his ID and badge the next day.
Najera was slapped with a 25-day suspension, which he has yet to serve.
The mayor’s office and police department wouldn’t comment on his suspension.
