Bunge North America has voluntarily recalled 64,800 pounds of butter due to the presence of undeclared milk.
The affected butter was distributed throughout the United States, as well as in the Dominican Republic.
People with milk allergies or sensitivities should take special caution before consuming Bunge-brand butter, as it can result in health consequences and allergic reactions.
Check your fridge! A recent recall, which affects nearly 65,000 pounds of butter, has just been elevated to Class II status–meaning consuming it could cause “temporary or medically reversible health consequences.” Bunge North America voluntarily recalled 1,800 cases (equivalent to 64,800 pounds) of its European Style Butter Blend on July 14 due to the presence of undeclared milk, a known allergen. Just last week, however, the FDA elevated the recall to Class II, alerting the public to potential downsides to consuming the recalled butter.
Those with allergies to milk should pay particular attention to whatever’s sitting in their fridge. While symptoms can widely vary, severe cases can result in hives, swelling, vomiting, and even death. The FDA cautions consumers that if anyone accidentally ingests the recalled products and experiences any allergy symptoms, they should seek medical attention and “evaluate the need to use emergency medication (such as epinephrine).”
The affected butter is packaged in white paperboard cases in one-pound slabs and contains the UPC code 1 00 78684 73961 2 and the lot code 5064036503. Additionally, the butter was dispersed to 12 different distribution centers across the United States, as well as one distribution center in the Dominican Republic.
If you do happen to have the affected Bunge butter in your fridge, the FDA cautions consumers not to consume it and instead throw it away or return it to your place of purchase. Butter safe than sorry!
