Chart-Topping Rock Band With Over One Million Listeners Is Revealed to be Totally AI-Generated originally appeared on Parade.
AI tools have, for better or for worse, become an almost normalized part of everyday life. Now, it’s even seeping into the music we listen to.
The Velvet Sundown, a dreamy ’60s and ’70s-inspired rock band that appeared out of nowhere on Spotify back in June, has revealed what many already suspected to be true: the group was primarily generated by AI.
In a statement released on X, the official band account explained the details of this “synthetic music project,” much to the shock and disappointment of the public.
The Velvet Sundown is a synthetic music project guided by human creative direction, and composed, voiced, and visualized with the support of artificial intelligence.

“The Velvet Sundown is a synthetic music project guided by human creative direction, and composed, voiced, and visualized with the support of artificial intelligence,” wrote the creators.
While they claim this project “isn’t a trick” but “a mirror,” the mastermind behind the AI band, who is still unknown, wrote that the group is an “ongoing artistic provocation designed to challenge the boundaries of authorship, identity, and the future of music itself in the age of AI.”
From the music to the imagery of the “band members” themselves, every part was created “with the assistance of artificial intelligence tools.”
The Velvet Sundown first appeared online with the release of their debut album, Floating on Echoes, on June 5. With over one million monthly listeners on Spotify and chart-topping songs like “Dust on the Wind,” which has over 1.2 million streams, the group is set to release their second album, Paper Sun Rebellion, on July 14.
Even the figures on the album covers aren’t real.
“All characters, stories, music, voices and lyrics are original creations generated with the assistance of artificial intelligence tools employed as creative instruments. Any resemblance to actual places, events or persons – living or deceased – is purely coincidental and unintentional,” the statement continued.
X users were quick to express their disapproval of the entire project.
“So. AI. As we knew all along. Well-played…I guess?” wrote user @LanceUlanoff.
“If this is “the future of music itself in the age of AI,” I don’t want to go there. I prefer artists have actual hearts and souls,” added @WOTPRadio.
Some fans wondered if the entire thing was AI-generated, or just parts of it.
“Not quite human. Not quite machine. The Velvet Sundown lives somewhere in between,” answered the band’s X post.
