Charlie Cox is recalling his very reasonable explanation for why his pal Jamie Dornan had difficulty landing roles at one point early on in his acting career.
The Daredevil: Born Again star, 42, revealed on Tuesday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live that the running punchline among their pre-fame friend group — which was comprised of himself, Dornan, Eddie Redmayne, Andrew Garfield, and Robert Pattinson — was that Dornan was simply too handsome to get cast in anything.
Cox explained to host Jimmy Kimmel that the group were all auditioning for the same parts at the time. “We’d all put each other on tape, and help each other,” he remembered, “and then be like, ‘Did you hear anything? I didn’t hear anything. Did you hear anything?’”

Some of them were a bit more successful than others. “My memory back then was that Andrew… he was dangerous. We were worried about him,” Cox teased. “And then the joke — oh, he’ll probably kill me for saying this — the joke was Jamie went through a very dry patch at one point, and we genuinely thought it was because he was too good-looking.”
He added, “I would say, ‘It’s just not — you’re not believable! It’s not believable. You can’t get cast in anything!’”
While they were still searching for their big break, Cox said that the now-famous friends could often be found hanging out and playing ping-pong at the now-shuttered Standard Hotel.
“I was actually texting with Jamie because at the Standard they used to do a Monday free valet parking if you had the burger. And they had a swimming pool and a ping pong table,” he recalled. “We would turn up at 11 a.m., get the free valet parking, order the burger, and then stay until they kicked us out.”

Thankfully, Dornan’s handsome features didn’t hamper his acting career in the long run. After rising to popularity in the Fifty Shades film series opposite Dakota Johnson, the 43-year-old has gone on to star in films such as Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, A Haunting in Venice, and the Oscar-winning Belfast. He has also headlined the comedy-thriller series The Tourist since 2022.
Dornan, however, may have a different recollection of the experience of who was the most attractive member of the group. He described Pattinson as the “good-looking one” while chatting with Access Hollywood in 2022.
When asked to dispel a rumor that the group would often leave Pattinson at home to go clubbing, Dornan told the outlet, “We never left him at home — why would you leave him at home? He was the key. He was the good-looking one! He was the one that got us in! He got us all the attention.”
