Carrie Underwood’s brunette hair is entering its second act.
Fans of the country singer have known her for her bright blonde tresses since her first run on American Idol, but Underwood recently decided to take a completely new hairstyle for a spin with the help of a dramatic transformation.
On Aug. 5, the “Before He Cheats” singer, 42, shared new Instagram photos of her brunette makeover that she explained resembles her natural color — which she last rocked 30 years ago.

“Well, the last time I saw my natural hair color, I was probably about 12 years old,” the Grammy winner wrote, “but I thought it might be time to give it a second chance.”
Underwood had an assist from Nashville hairstylist Katelin Megert, who cut, colored and styled her hair into an ashy brown mid-length cut with golden highlighted layers.

In a 2012 interview with Refinery29, Underwood explained her reasoning for always being blonde. It’s not like she didn’t want to experiment, but she felt testing the waters would signal big change in her life.
“I’d love to do a little more with hair color. I’ve always been blonde! The problem is, I don’t want to shock people — like if I dyed my hair brown, I don’t want people think I’m turning dark and serious. I wish I had started changing my hair around in the beginning, then it wouldn’t be such a big shock if I did something like that now,” she said.

Still, the Oklahoma native has played around with different styles and cuts over the years, amping up her looks on red carpets, on stage and on screen. After all, going big or going home when she’s in superstar mode is when she gets to have fun with her aesthetic.

“It’s a chance for me to play a character. That’s what I love about music: I get to play a role. I try to dress and look, with hair and makeup, like I fit in that role,” she further shared with Refinery29.
While that’s meant Underwood has pulled out all the stops with daring — and sometimes expected — fashion and beauty choices, she has, before, slipped back into the familiar, like when she rewore one of her most memorable looks from her American Idol era.
During her stint as judge on season 23 of the singing competition show, she surprised fans by rewearing the bohemian halter dress she first won the show in in 2005. Despite the 20-year gap between the two style moments, the dress fit Underwood like a glove. “Same dress, different view. #CUonIDOL,” she wrote on Instagram.
