As celebrities descended on the Cannes Film Festival that’s scheduled to begin Tuesday and run through May 24, organizers updated the dress code to say that “For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival.”

The words don’t represent a change in the prestigious festival’s policy, just an updating of its charter, a rep for the event told The Hollywood Reporter. They said the addition isn’t meant to “regulate attire per se, but to prohibit full nudity on the carpet.”
Also a no-go at Cannes, per the updated dress code? “Voluminous” looks; “in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted,” according to the festival’s official charter. “The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.”

The world’s largest film festival, Cannes has long had a strict dress code, with screenings often requiring black-tie. Women were denied admission for showing up to the screening venue without heels in 2015,THR noted. Emily Blunt, for one, called the incident “very disappointing.”
The move comes as female celebrities are once again embracing the trend of sheer and nude looks, as demonstrated by celebrities including Halle Berry, who recently showed some skin at the Met Gala, Florence Pugh, Janelle Monae, and Dua Lipa.

Held for the first time in 1946, the film festival regularly sees the premieres of awards season contenders and celebrities on the red carpet. Last year alone, Oscar winners The Substance, Emilia Pérez, and Anora, which won Best Picture, all debuted at Cannes.
This year’s iteration will — as always — feature A-listers, including Scarlett Johansson, Tom Cruise, and Jennifer Lawrence. Johnasson’s directorial debut, Eleanor the Great, which stars June Squibb, will premiere, as will Cruise’s Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning.
