Apparently, Prince William “loathes and despises”Prince Harry and Meghan Markle “with every bone in his body” and is extremely peeved that Meghan has been using her HRH title. Quick background:
-
The Queen told Meghan and Harry to stop using HRH titles when they stepped down from Senior Royal Duties in 2020.
-
Buckingham Palace put out a statement at the time, saying “The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles, as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family.”
-
Meghan recently used the title by signing a note: “With the Compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex.”
-
A source close to the Duchess told the Daily Beast that “Harry and Meghan retain their HRH titles; however, by agreement, they do not use them for commercial purposes. While they do not publicly use ‘HRH,’ this was a personal gift, and their titles remain.”
And now there’s chatter that Prince William will formally strip the couple of their titles once he levels up to King William, with a source telling the Daily Beast “There is no way King William will stand for this. The titles will simply be removed when he is king. A way will be found.”
But…can Prince William legally take these titles away? Depends on who you ask.
Former minister Norman Baker tells the Daily Beast that “The law is not clear, but I have little doubt that as the bestowing of an HRH is in the gift of the monarch, the monarch could remove the HRH title. It would basically be the equivalent to an executive order in the U.S.”
However, People reports that the removal of a dukedom (reminder: the Queen made Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Duke and Duchess of Sussex when they got married in 2018) would require “legislative action through an act of Parliament.” Though apparently there have been “discussions” about new legislation that would allow the monarch to remove titles, so…guess we’ll see what happens!
