  • Busy Philipps is shedding new light on the end of her marriage to Marc Silverstein, whom she announced she’d separated from in an emotional episode of her podcast in 2022

  • Philipps and Silverstein had been married for nearly 15 years when she announced their split, which had actually happened the year before

  • The actress shares her two daughters, Birdie, 16, and Cricket, 11, with the screenwriter

Busy Philipps is opening up about the work she and her ex-husband Marc Silverstein put into their relationship before separating after nearly 15 years of marriage.

On Jennie Garth’s I Choose Me podcast, Philipps, who announced her separation from Silverstein in 2022 and revealed they’d actually split the year before, gave new insight into what led to the split from her husband, whom she married in 2007.

“He and I had an evolution of our relationship, and we worked in therapy for a really long time before we actually separated to try to just see what was possible and what our relationship could look like,” Philipps, 45, said.

Their relationship has “shifted and evolved and it looks different” nowadays, she continued. “But I just want, I mean, what I want for him, I know he wants for me, which is ultimately, we want each other to be happy and fulfilled.”

Philipps also said that she and her ex are “trying” their best when it comes to co-parenting their two children, Birdie, 16, and Cricket, 11.

“Marc and I have known each other now — it’ll be 20 years in June. It’s a huge chunk of my life that this person has been in,” she said of the 53-year-old screenwriter. “And we have always been deeply committed to the love that we have together for our kids. Because we do have love together for our children.”

The Girls5Eva star announced that she and Silverstein had separated in an emotional episode of her podcast, Busy Philipps Is Doing Her Thing, as she said they’d decided to wait on making the split public to “ensure the privacy of our kids that we love so f—— much.”

“There’s a conventional idea of what a person in the public eye is supposed to do when their relationship ends, and it’s been very well established, right? Like, you make a statement, you’re committed to remaining friends, ‘please respect our privacy and our family’s privacy in this time,’ right?” she said. “But the truth is, like, who made that rule up, that that’s how you do it? I’m serious.”

The idea of “putting one of those statements out” made her and Silverstein feel “truly ill,” she said, so they opted to follow their own timeline.

The actress said last year that she and her ex make co-parenting work because they remember “that we made a promise to each other and to our kids.”

“Being able to communicate is important and necessary,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “And we weren’t going to let any hurt feelings on our side affect how we can show up for what is essentially still a family.”

Since announcing the split in 2022, Philipps has not commented much on the end of her marriage, nor has she confirmed any new relationships, but she was spotted packing on the PDA with a new beau in New York City last year.

In a photo obtained by PEOPLE, Philipps and her new mystery man looked cozy as they walked with their arms wrapped around each other after a dinner with Michelle Williams. They were also spotted kissing at one point.
