In honor of what would have been Warhol’s 97th birthday on August 6, Shields shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, posting a series of throwback photos of the late artist.
“Our dear Andy Warhol would’ve been 97 today 🎨,” she wrote. “Forever thankful for his youthful spirit and enduring genius.”
While the pairing of Brooke Shields and Andy Warhol—who would have been in his 40s and 50s at the time of their friendship—may seem unexpected, their paths crossed in the late 1970s through New York City’s vibrant art and nightlife scene, particularly at the famed nightclub Studio 54.
Warhol was said to be drawn to Shields, who was rapidly gaining fame, and frequently photographed her at events. He even considered her his muse.
In an interview with The Times of London, Shields once noted that Warhol treated her like a “little mascot.” She celebrated the release of Warhol’s 1979 book Exposures and appeared on the cover of Interview Magazine, which Warhol founded.
In her 2023 documentary Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, Shields reflected on her time as a teen in the Studio 54 scene. She described herself as a young regular in Warhol’s social circle, but noted that she always felt protected and somewhat removed from the club’s more notorious elements.
