Brian Austin Green delivers a raw, emotional reflection on losing “90210” co-stars Luke Perry and Shannen Doherty — calling it “s—-y” — as he reveals how their deaths reshaped his perspective on time, loyalty, and the fragility of life.
If loss has taught Brian Austin Green nothing else, it’s to never take the time left for granted. The actor, once known for his role as David Silver on the groundbreaking teen series Beverly Hills, 90210, opened up during a recent appearance on the Inside of You podcast with Michael Rosenbaum, sharing how the deaths of his former costars Luke Perry and Shannen Doherty have fundamentally altered his outlook on life.
Green described Perry’s death in March 2019 — from a stroke at age 52 — as “a really tough one.” He recalled having just spent time with Perry before hearing the devastating news. “I had seen Luke not even a week before then,” Green said. “And we’d had lunch and he was Luke. He was the same exact person that I’ve known. And all of a sudden I got a call and it was like, ‘Hey, he’s in the hospital. He had a stroke last night.’ And then two days later, ‘Yeah, he didn’t make it.’ Like, what? What? You’re kidding, right? I’m being like punked right now? This doesn’t make any sense.”
The emotional whiplash came again with Doherty’s passing last July after a long battle with cancer. Green noted he had always sensed time slipping away with her — she was diagnosed with Stage Four cancer years earlier — but still couldn’t fathom losing her so soon. “It wasn’t in the front of my mind, but there was always that thing in the back of my mind of appreciate all of these moments because you don’t know how many more you’re going to get,” Green said. “So yeah, just enjoy all of this time that’s left.”
Doherty held a special place in Green’s heart — not just as a co-star, but as a cherished friend. He remembered her dancing with him and his friends in dressing rooms during downtime, describing her as “super fun” and “an incredible heart.” “She used to dance with me and my friends in my dressing room when we had time off, which we had a lot of,” Green recalled. “And, she was super fun. She was just an incredible heart.”
He also praised her loyalty — noting she stood by those who were loyal to her, calling her “an amazing human being.” “The Charmed alum was so loyal to people that were friends of hers and that were loyal with her,” Green added. “She was just an amazing human being.”
Green’s grief is compounded by the realization that aging brings a deeper awareness of mortality — and how much less predictable life becomes. “It’s s—-y when you lose people at the age we are now, because like, I know I’m gonna lose people that I love in my life — that’s inevitable,” he told Rosenbaum. “But you don’t think you’re gonna lose them this early on. So when you do, it’s just like, I never saw that coming. And it, like, smacks me in the face. I’m at that age, we’re in our fifties.”
Green’s reflections echo a broader sentiment among fans of ’90210’ — that while the show’s legacy lives on through its iconic characters and enduring cast, the personal bonds forged on set remain irreplaceable. His candidness reminds us that behind every performance lies a story shaped by real friendships, shared laughter, and ultimately, shared sorrow.
For fans hoping for a reunion or sequel, Green’s words offer a poignant reminder: time is fleeting — and the only thing we can control is how we choose to live within it. As he says himself, “Enjoy all of this time that’s left.”
